REFARMO provides Satellite-enabled Field Scouting

Farmers find it difficult to ascertain the exact conditions of their fields and crops. Usually, they learn how to identify potential issues about their fields through experience. Even then, it is still tricky to figure out the reasons for crop damage since there could be several factors, such as waterlogging or pests. To replace guesswork and improve productivity, startups offer advanced field scouting technologies that utilize satellite imagery and geospatial intelligence.

Austrian startup REFARMO develops scouting algorithms to automatically process satellite images and check fields for various parameters and conditions. The artificial intelligence (AI)-based algorithms detect drainage issues and crop damage as well as identify low and high productivity sectors. The solution also calculates crop dry down processes and creates variable rate maps. REFARMO enables farmers to gain valuable insights into their fields and take measures to prevent crop damage, in turn, reducing yield waste and economic losses.

EarthOptics enables Soil Compaction Mapping

In large agricultural operations, the soil is constantly under pressure from heavy machinery and the use of chemicals. This eventually leads to soil compaction, which results in high rectification expenditure for agriculture companies. Moreover, the process lowers the ability of water and other nutrients to permeate the soil and, subsequently, crop yields as well. That is why AgriTech startups are developing integrated solutions to monitor and manage soil conditions.

Based in the US, EarthOptics is an AgriTech startup building solutions that integrate sensors, machine learning (ML), and ground-penetrating radar. Its products include GroundOwl, a soil density measurement tool, and TillMapper, a precision soil mapping system. Further, the startup’s proprietary ML platform, C-Mapper, combines data from sensors and remote-sensing tools to interpret large farmlands. Through its solutions, the startup enables farmers to reduce soil compaction-related losses and improve soil health.

QZ Solutions offers Soil Nutrient Mapping

Different crops require different levels of nutrients in the soil for their proper growth and maximum yield. However, farmers struggle to understand the reasons for crop damage, which sometimes results in the overuse of chemical fertilizers. Such practices reduce soil fertility and also damage the larger environment by mixing in water streams. To reduce fertilizer use and improve soil health, startups develop soil mapping tools that identify nutrient deficiencies and enable precision farming.

Polish startup QZ Solutions builds SoilEO, a remote and high-resolution mapping solution to identify soil nutrients. It applies AI-based algorithms and analyzes hyperspectral field images to extract information about macroelements levels in the soil. The solution replaces lab-dependent soil mapping based on samples and provides data on the levels of magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, and pH, among others. This allows farmers to reduce soil testing expenses and quickly obtain insights into the quality of their soil.

TerraRad Tech develops Soil Water Content Measurement Tools

The quantity of water contained in soil plays an important role in determining the types of crops that can be grown. Measuring soil water content also provides information about groundwater recharge capacities and informs irrigation practices. However, traditional measurements using gravimetric methods, while popular, sometimes damage the soil. To safely and accurately measure water content in the soil, AgriTech startups combine advanced imaging technologies and drones.

Swiss startup TerraRad Tech builds a radiometer that generates field maps. The startup’s L-band radiometers provide simultaneous soil and crop water content measurements. Moreover, they are mounted on drones, tractors, or other agricultural machinery to collect data from five to ten centimeters under the soil. As a result, the startup allows differentiating between soil and crop water content. Farmers then utilize this data to optimize irrigation, save water, and increase yield.

Aero Vines advances Horticulture Mapping

Monitoring the quality of soil and crops is especially important for horticulture, such as in orchards or vineyards. In the absence of such monitoring, crop yields and harvest quality reduce, resulting in more waste. This prompts AgriTech startups to develop solutions capable of accurately mapping fields. For example, advanced drone-based mapping solutions collect high-resolution field data to ease crop management for farmers and horticulturalists.

Australian startup Aero Vines offers real-time drone-based data gathering and processing tools for horticulture mapping. The startup develops mapping products for vineyards and orchards to precisely monitor the development of a crop. The solution reveals field inefficiencies and identifies which parts of a crop require immediate attention, enabling farmers to take corrective measures throughout the growth cycle. For example, viticulturists receive 2D and 3D block-level maps which guide future irrigation and crop management decisions.
