Our Innovation Analysts recently looked into emerging technologies and up-and-coming startups in the electric vehicle sector. As there is a large number of startups working on a wide variety of solutions, we decided to share our insights with you. This time, we are taking a look at 4 promising battery advancement solutions.
Heat Map: 4 Top Battery Advancement Startups
For our 4 picks of startups, we used a data-driven startup scouting approach to identify the most relevant solutions globally. The Global Startup Heat Map below highlights 4 interesting examples out of 200 relevant solutions. Depending on your specific needs, your top picks might look entirely different.
Chilweebattery – Lead Acid
Lead acid-based batteries were used in electric vehicles due to the maturity of the technology and the low cost. However, this type of battery does not provide a long life cycle as compared to newer technologies. Chinese Chilweebattery is a manufacturer and distributor of lead-acid batteries for electric vehicles. It also develops automobile start-stop batteries in cooperating with other OEM companies.
E4v – Lithium Ion
Lithium-Ion batteries are able to provide better power to size ratio and have a very high charge/discharge efficiency. The downside to this material is that they pose a fire safety risk due to their flammable nature and show greater deterioration with age. French E4v designs and develops Lithium-Ion battery solutions for electric vehicle applications. Their battery packs are designed to be modular and offer the best cost, performance and safety confirmed through lab testing.
Lianinno – Lithium-Ion Polymer
Lithium-Ion Polymer batteries are the result of continued development and research of Lithium-Ion batteries. These batteries have a polymer electrolyte instead of a liquid electrolyte, which makes them more compact and offers higher specific energy. Canada-based Lianinno is a specialist for the design, engineering, and manufacturing of custom Lithium-Ion Polymer batteries for electric vehicles. The custom made battery solutions are developed to ensure the best safety standards and provide maximum lifetime/charge cycles for the battery packs.
Nanoflowcell – Flow Battery
A flow battery forgoes the conventional method of recharging a battery and is similar to conventional fossil fuel refueling. The flow battery recharges by removing the discharged/used electrolyte liquid and refilling. This system offers a very big life cycle and low maintenance cost with its drawbacks being lower energy density and discharge rate. Swiss Nanoflowcell is focused on the research and development in the field of energy storage and flow cells. They have developed a compact flow cell technology that is the size of a briefcase and increases the energy density of the electrolytes. Their product is scalable, long lasting and very low maintenance.
