Who are the other 119 Flow Batteries Startups?

RedT Energy – Vanadium

Vanadium flow storage technology uses the flow of vanadium electrolyte across an ion exchange membrane. The advantages of this type of storage are safety, scalability and long-term operation. Vanadium electrolyte used in this battery is non-flammable and the battery operates at room temperature.

British startup RedT Energy produces storage machines that use proprietary vanadium redox flow technology to store energy in liquids without degrading. Inflow energy storage electrolyte is stored in tanks, outside of the cell stack. This makes RedT’s storage solutions scalable, as more electrolytes or stacks can be added on a modular basis. Moreover, these batteries have a long lifespan of over 25 years.

Jena Batteries – Organic

An organic flow battery is inflammable, non-explosive and does not include any heavy metals or any aggressive acid. These batteries are suitable for off-grid, island grid and microgrid applications, the storage of renewable energy, load shifting & peak shaving, emergency power supply as well as e-mobility charging solutions.

German startup Jena Batteries develops produces and sells safe and scalable organic-redox-flow-battery systems, using a patented metal-free electrolyte working principle. They serve the market with systems starting at a capacity of 40 kWh.

Primus Power – Zinc-Bromine

A zinc-bromine flow battery is a type of hybrid flow battery, where zinc bromide electrolyte and metallic zinc are stored in two tanks. The advantages of this energy storage include 100% depth of discharge capability on a daily basis, high energy density, scalability and no shelf life limitations as zinc-bromine batteries are non-perishable.

Primus Power, a startup from the USA, manufactures safe and long duration zinc-bromine batteries, which ensure renewable energy integration and help utilities avoid costly upgrades on overloaded substations. Utilities can use these long-duration batteries instead of fossil-based systems to satisfy peak power needs, defer costly system upgrades, and shift mid-day oversupply of renewable photovoltaic generation to evening peak periods.

ViZn Energy Systems – Zinc-Iron

Zinc-iron flow batteries are non-explosive, non-flammable, non-toxic, recyclable at the end of their life, and made from globally abundant materials. These batteries are suitable for utility-scale wind and solar applications.

The US-based ViZn Energy Systems develops and produces flow batteries that experience zero capacity fade over 20 years. These batteries are capable of performing both rapid high-power discharges and slower, long-duration releases at lower power – unlike other comparable storage technologies, which can only do one or the other.

Ess Inc. – Iron Flow

These long-duration batteries utilize a non-toxic, non-hazardous, and completely recyclable iron-based electrolyte that provides over 20,000 cycles of power with little or no maintenance.

The US-based Ess Inc provides sustainable, scalable and easily transportable iron flow energy storage. This battery is made using food-grade, earth-abundant elements like iron, salt, and water for the electrolyte. The company claims that its long-duration battery solution also comes at a lower cost than lithium-ion batteries.
