Sunswap develops Solar Transport Refrigeration

Mobile refrigeration vehicles find applications in a number of industries such as agriculture, medical, pharmaceutical, food, and more. However, typically these diesel powered-vehicles are highly polluting during their operation and due to their importance in cold supply chains cannot be replaced or removed. For this reason, startups are removing emissions from refrigeration by using solar energy to power them instead of fossil fuel.

UK-based startup Sunswap is decarbonizing the cold chain with zero-emission transport refrigeration. Their mobile refrigeration unit uses a roof-mounted array of solar panels to provide green energy to operate the refrigeration system. Moreover, the startup’s patent-pending adaptive battery capacity and variable speed reciprocating compressor technology allow for long-duration operability. The startup’s solution enables cold chain transportation operators to reduce their carbon footprint without any reduction in transport time.

Hyzon Motors manufactures Hydrogen-powered Trucks

The burning of fossil fuels creates large amounts of carbon emissions which creates a barrier in the atmosphere, trapping heat and driving climate change. To avoid this, the automotive and energy industries are transitioning to green energy alternatives such as hydrogen. Unlike fossil fuels, water is the only by-product of hydrogen as a fuel. This is why automotive startups are building hydrogen-powered vehicles to further the transition to a hydrogen economy.

US-based startup Hyzon Motors creates a range of hydrogen-powered trucks that use fuel cell modules. Their current vehicles are deployable with fuel cell systems of 150kW to 370kW and include prime mover/tractor-trailer configurations and heavy rigid truck platforms. In addition, the high-density fuel cells in their trucks give them a driving range of up to 600km. Their vehicles decarbonize application areas such as intercity rail, mining, port equipment, marine vessels, and long haul and short-haul heavy vehicles.

Hynion creates Hydrogen Refueling Stations

The automotive industry is developing hydrogen fuel cell vehicles as an alternative to fossil fuels to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions. Moreover, the use of hydrogen to power vehicles is more efficient than a traditional combustion engine with the added benefit of water being the only emission. However, to enable the transition of the automotive industry to hydrogen fuel, the supporting infrastructure needs to be in place. This is the reason why startups are creating hydrogen refueling stations to power hydrogen fuel-based vehicles.

Norwegian startup Hynion builds hydrogen fuel stations in and around cities. The startup’s hydrogen refueling stations, one of which is fully operational as of now, are fully automated. Moreover, these stations are safer than conventional petrol or diesel refueling stations.

Volta EV develops Electric Vehicles

Electric vehicles have a wide range of benefits over internal combustion engines such as no toxic gas emissions, higher efficiency, lower maintenance, and more. However, the lack of constant full-time electricity in developing countries acts as a barrier to the complete transition of the automotive industry to electric vehicles. To overcome this problem, startups are developing electric vehicles that have alternative sources of charging that alleviate some of the reliance on power grids for energy.

Nigerian startup Volta EV develops an electric vehicle that features an auxiliary battery. The startup’s auxiliary battery uses rooftop solar power generators to charge itself while the vehicle is stationary or in motion. Additionally, the auxiliary battery is detachable and acts as a backup battery pack with an operational time of up to 4 hours. This system of battery and charging allows automotive vehicle owners to operate their vehicles without worrying about the inconsistent supply of power in developing countries.

Infinite Mobility manufactures Solar-powered Tricycles

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly increased the amount of last-mile deliveries due to shopping restrictions and social distancing prompting users to shop online with doorstep delivery. As such the increased vehicular traffic from last-mile deliveries increases the amount of pollution created. Moreover, more pollution is emitted per travel due to increased engine idling time from traffic congestions. To alleviate these problems, startups are developing solar-powered last-mile delivery vehicles that reduce emissions and positively utilize idle time through solar charging.

Norwegian startup Infinite Mobility manufactures solar-powered lightweight electric tricycles. The vehicle’s roof contains approximately 4.6 square meters of solar panels that together generate up to 584 kWh per year. This produces enough electricity for the vehicles to travel a distance of over 12 000 km per year. The vehicles also use advanced lithium batteries. Infinite Mobility’s solution allows delivery services in cities without extensive EV charging infrastructure to electrify their last-mile delivery vehicles.
