Eco Energy International produces Renewable Diesel

Transitioning to alternative fuels is the first step in decarbonizing the automotive industry. Even then, older vehicles that use petroleum-based fuels contribute to climate change and pollution. The high price of electric vehicles (EVs) also deters vehicle owners from making the transition to EVs. Therefore, startups develop biofuels that replace conventional automotive fuels. This way, vehicle owners do not have to invest in retrofitting or modifications while reducing their environmental impact.

Eco Energy International is a US-based startup that produces renewable diesel. The startup utilizes municipal solid waste (MSW) to generate its fuel. Besides, its waste-to-energy processing uses a similar approach to petroleum diesel production, which makes them chemically identical. The startup’s renewable diesel uses hydrogenation which further eliminates the need for blending winterized diesel during winters to avoid gel formation, facilitating the clean energy transition among vehicle owners. The startup also provides an eco-friendly hydrogen production solution.

Jaunt Motors enables EV Retrofitting

Range anxiety and initial high costs are major challenges that stall the adoption of a carbon-free economy in the automotive sector. Moreover, with vehicle sales accelerating, new vehicle owners are not ready to spend more capital to replace their fossil-fuel-powered vehicles. Therefore, startups offer EV retrofitting solutions that convert conventional internal combustion engine vehicles into EVs. Such solutions are low-cost and increase the lifespan of vehicles, thereby advancing sustainability.

Australian startup Jaunt Motors provides EV retrofitting for Land Rovers models from 1958 to 2015. The startup replaces internal combustion engine and fuel, exhaust, and radiator systems with readily available EV parts. It assembles electric motors, charging and regenerative braking systems, batteries, as well as power steering from other manufacturers. For instance, it uses Tesla battery packs and Netgain electric motors. In effect, the startup’s EV retrofitting enables users to transform conventional vehicles with quality EV parts at low costs.

MAGNAX advances Electric Motors

The decarbonization of the utility grid is critical to minimize the carbon footprint of EVs. Even then, the sourcing of materials for EV production continues to elevate carbon dioxide emissions. To decarbonize automotive manufacturing, startups streamline sourcing and processing as well as improve vehicle energy efficiency that enables OEMs to reduce their carbon footprint. For example, some startups develop zero-carbon lithium using natural sources and renewable energy to avoid hard-rock mining of lithium.

MAGNAX is a Belgian startup that develops Magnax Yokeless Axial Flux Machine, a high-speed electric motor for EVs. The startup’s motor combines a patented cooling system, dual permanent magnet rotors, a yokeless stator, and electrical steel to increase its power density. Additionally, the motor is lightweight and, hence, suitable for ground e-mobility applications. Since shorter flux paths and cooling systems reduce stator temperature, MAGNAX’s motors enhance energy efficiency while consuming less fuel.

Uniti builds Electric Cars

Electric vehicles are essential components to slow down climate change. But, it is not enough to stop the carbon emissions generated by the automotive sector. That is why environmentally-conscious travelers prefer carpooling and sharing services over vehicle ownership as it reduces their carbon footprint. To this end, automotive manufacturers build cars and vehicles for shared mobility rather than personal vehicle ownership.

Swedish startup Uniti builds electric cars tailored for shared mobility. The startup utilizes a carbon and resource management strategy (CRMS) to develop its climate-neutral cars. They are lightweight and agile since the startup utilizes appropriate materials and manufacturing techniques, making them ideal for urban mobility. Moreover, it uses smartphone-like connectivity and development-friendly architecture to facilitate peer-to-peer (P2P) and fleet car sharing.

ELO Mobility provides Hydrogen-Powered Bus Designs

Adopting battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are sustainable only if they use renewable energy for recharging. In contrast, hydrogen-powered vehicles produce zero carbon emissions and significantly reduce the users’ carbon footprints. Also, the refueling period of hydrogen-powered vehicles is much less than BEVs. That is why startups develop fuel-cell vehicles which advance automotive electrification.

ELO Mobility is a German startup that provides hydrogen fuel cell bus designs. The startup’s modular platform combines energy management components, telemetry systems, and drive trains to develop hydrogen-powered buses. Additionally, ELO Mobility retrofits combustion buses as well as offers ELO H2 Bus models as white label versions. Thus, the startup’s solutions allow OEMs to speed up their time-to-market while reducing capital expenditure.
