5 Healthcare Trends to Look Forward to

Healthcare providers and patients are generating more data than ever before, including medical images, omics data, real-world data from wearables, and a range of other digital biomarkers. AI startups, growing from a quarter of the industry to a third of it, help derive insights from this data, as well as enable a range of digital healthcare applications. In this period, there has been a rapid expansion of mobiles and other consumer electronics, followed by growth in digital therapeutics. Startups are working on AR/VR solutions that help with mental therapy, as well as rehabilitation from injuries.

Innovations in miniature robotics, soft robotics, as well as new sensors and the Internet of Things (IoT) technologies are opening up novel use cases of robotics. However, it takes up a slightly smaller share of the healthcare industry now. More recently, the social distancing norms mandated due to the coronavirus pandemic have raised the popularity of telehealth solutions. This is reflected by the large spike in telemedicine startups in 2020. Regenerative medicine continues to occupy a niche part of the industry. However, the trend will grow in the years to come with recent technologies in gene editing and biomaterial scaffolds.
