ThreeMain produces Non-Toxic Disinfecting Household Cleaners

As disinfectants are routinely used in households, brands have to ensure there is no damaging effect on human health. However, conventional disinfectants are not always evaluated for human health and environmental safety. They often contain parabens, formaldehyde, phthalates, glycol solvents, artificial colors, or VOCs, harmful to both health and the environment. To minimize such negative effects, startups are developing new FMCG products that contain less toxic chemicals and are safer to use and dispose of.

US-based startup ThreeMain produces non-toxic disinfecting household cleaners. The cleaning products are carbon-neutral and contain disinfecting ingredients like hydrogen peroxide and hyaluronic acid. Hydrogen peroxide is active against a wide range of microorganisms, including bacteria, yeasts, fungi, viruses, and spores. It is a planet-friendly substitute for bleach or alcohol in cleaning products. Moreover, all their products are packaged only in sustainable packaging.

CleanCult develops Zero-Waste Cleaning Products

Most cleaning products are sold in single-use plastic bottles. Mostly, this plastic cannot be recycled and piles up in landfills. As a result tonnes of plastic enter the world’s oceans and pollute the land because of its long degradation cycle. To reduce the use of single-use plastic bottles and minimize damage to the environment, startups develop reusable and recyclable detergent packaging solutions.

Puerto Rican startup CleanCult offers zero-waste cleaning products. The startup leverages its CocoClean technology which harnesses the natural antimicrobial and antifungal properties of coconuts but leaves out chemicals. Also, the startup develops a Refill-Recycle-Repeat system and puts dish soaps and laundry products in recyclable milk cartons. Customers match refillable glass bottles with respective refill cartons to get a sustainable cleaning experience.

Souji creates Cleaning Products using Recycled Vegetable Oil

Cooking oil is used in a wide variety of cooking and must be properly disposed of or recycled. When it enters the natural environment, it causes problems, especially if it enters municipal sewer systems. To protect the natural environment, cooking oil must be collected and then recycled. Startups are developing solutions that enable oil recycling and usage for household applications such as cleaning products.

Spanish startup Souji offers cleaning soaps and detergents from recycled vegetable oil. The startup develops filters to convert used vegetable oil into a detergent without the use of caustic soda. Customers pour the oil through the filter and shake the bottle to get an environmentally-friendly cleaning product. The detergent is suitable for use in washing machines or hand-washing clothes, as well as for mopping floors and washing dishes.

Dreambly builds a Sustainable Laundry Solution

Chemical detergents are toxic and bring harm to human health and the environment when mixed into the water ecosystem. To minimize the negative effect of conventional detergents, startups are looking for safer alternatives and developing solutions from natural ingredients. Biological enzymes are one of such compounds and are suitable for laundry detergents since it does not result in loss of performance.

US-based startup Dreambly develops a 6-in-1 sustainable laundry solution. The startup leverages its patented, FDA-approved, natural nanotechnology to produce biodegradable laundry sheets. The sheet replaces detergents, whiteners, brighteners, softeners, stain removers, and dryer sheets. The solution contains 100% organic, biodegradable, and all-natural ingredients such as organic stabilizers, purified water, essential oils, and natural enzymes.

Calyxia offers Bio-based Fragrance Microcapsules

Non-biodegradable fragrances, which end up in the environment, are still extremely prevalent while manufacturing cleaning products. However, as environmental aspects are becoming more important, encapsulated biodegradable alternatives are gaining popularity. Encapsulation increases the stability of biodegradable fragrances for use in cleaning products.

French startup Calyxia develops biodegradable and bio-based fragrance microcapsules for home care products. The startup uses its patented double emulsion process to industrially manufacture and customize microcapsules, containing functional ingredients. The microcapsules provide a long-lasting freshness effect, which is key to the consumer experience and brand differentiation. The bio-based microcapsules enable home care brands to meet the sustainability needs of today.
