E-Fish enables Localized Seafood Procurement

The highly industrialized fishing industry faces significant challenges to overcome unsustainable practices. When it comes to sourcing fish, overfishing is depleting a significant portion of global wild fish populations. This, in turn, creates shortages for small fishermen and negatively impacts their livelihoods. Startups look to address both these issues by building sustainable business models, such as procurement platforms for local fishermen and consumers.

US-based startup E-Fish builds a direct-to-consumer (D2C) seafood platform connecting local fishermen and consumers. The startup employs a sustainable business model from the time of catching fish up to the delivery of seafood orders and eco-friendly packaging. The E-Fish model ensures that small fishermen catch fish only after an order is placed. This allows the startup to deliver fish to customers within two days of making a catch.

Blue Lobster builds a Low-Impact Seafood Sourcing App

The fishing industry, which fuels seafood sourcing, currently leaves a high impact on various natural resources. From trawlers discarding unintentional by-catch and polluting aquaculture farms to illegal and unregulated fishing, the industry heavily damages marine ecosystems. To address this, startups and emerging seafood companies develop sustainable sourcing practices. This includes complex solutions for managing fisheries as well as simple smartphone-based applications.

Blue Lobster is a Danish startup building a mobile app to enable sustainable seafood sourcing. The startup’s app connects chefs with fishermen who implement low-impact fishing practices. It also ensures that local fishermen are paid fairly for their catch. Further, this sourcing solution ensures that chefs, fishermen, and end-consumers participate to maintain a local, high-quality, and low-impact seafood economy.

Seafood Souq improves Seafood Traceability

Increasingly, consumers want to know the origins of their food, especially fish and meat products. Unhealthy fish farming practices and the risk of catching a disease from seafood consumption, like Salmonella, contribute to the rise in consumer awareness. This is why startups develop farm-to-fork traceability solutions specifically for seafood. Digital tools, such as QR-codes or radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags, enable consumers to buy seafood only from verified and sustainable sources.

Based out of the UAE, Seafood Souq provides SFS Trace, a bespoke technology that informs users about the traceability of seafood products in a centralized platform. The startup sends a unique QR code when customers place an order, which then links to the SFS Trace page. This page displays all the traceability information and provides a timeline of the product’s journey from the sea to consumers’ doorsteps. As a result, Seafood Souq promotes sustainable sourcing and ensures high quality of seafood while also eliminating opportunities for fraud.

Pescavore specializes in Wild-Caught Seafood

Fish aggregating devices (FADs) are widely in use by the fishing industry. These devices are typically tied to the ocean floor or through buoys and find use in targeting large shoals of fish, such as tuna or mackerel. In addition to overfishing and depleting wild fish resources, FADs damage the ecosystem by unintentionally killing important or endangered predators who are attracted by the shoals of fish. To counter the impact of such practices, startups develop sustainable solutions to source wild fish.

Pescavore is a US-based food startup producing seafood products such as tuna jerky strips. Pescavore’s snacks only utilize sustainable, wild-caught seafood as the clean marine-based protein. The startup’s supply of yellowfin tuna is caught off the coast of California by local fishermen. Since they use the purse seine technique to catch free-swimming schools of tuna without the use of FADs, Pescavore and their local fishing partners ensure minimal damage to the ecosystem.

Captain Fresh advances Data-driven Seafood Supply Chain Management

The fishing industry, like most other industries, is also starting to utilize data to make sustainable improvements to seafood supply chains. Without proper information or insights, the industry is plagued with degrading product quality and food safety, as well as more complex issues, such as price-fixing and seafood fraud. This prompts startups and emerging tech companies to build data-driven platforms to drive sustainable seafood sourcing through traceability.

Indian startup Captain Fresh builds a business-to-business (B2B) platform for seafood supply chains. The platform offers businesses, farmers, and fishermen different tools to improve supply chain reliability and transparency while minimizing the dump rate. The startup’s harvest-to-retail technology is also suitable for all types of users, irrespective of their digital abilities. The platform’s tools Capt. Quick, Capt. Fair, and Capt. Honest sets the fastest delivery routes, standardizes rules regarding seafood quality, and drives product transparency, respectively.
