Mendolor provides a Pain Measurement Application

Pain is an important metric that helps doctors assess a patient’s condition. However, pain measurement is largely self-reported and lacks a standard scale, leading to discrepancies. Inaccurate pain measurement may lead to incorrect medication dosage being prescribed, which in turn might lead to opioid addiction. To address this, HealthTech startups develop accurate pain assessment solutions.

Finnish startup Mendolor develops a pain measurement application. The comprehensive pain measurement solution uses objective measures to gauge pain, replacing the traditional 1-10 scale of pain measurement. The app combines patient-reported pain data with an objective scale of pain measurements for more accurate opioid recommendations which improve the quality of pain management.

VRx Medical develops Digital Therapeutics

Administering injections to resisting or crying children is challenging. Though injections are only required at very long intervals for most cases, conditions such as diabetes necessitate more frequent injections. This may cause vaccine hesitancy in parents, leading to negative consequences in the long term. Startups are developing digital therapeutics that focus children’s attention on the entertainment displayed rather than the injection which results in a more positive experience.

Chilean startup VRx Medical develops virtual reality (VR) software to distract children during injection administration. VRx Guardian, the startup’s platform, uses a VR headset and smartphone to divert the child’s attention using an interactive story. The solution provides a cost-effective and efficient solution for tear-free pediatric care.

Regulonix develops Non-Addictive Therapeutics

Chronic pain affects a large percentage of the global population. People who work in physically demanding environments are especially prone to chronic pain and use opioids to manage it. Additionally, opioids also find applications in the management of dental pain and post-surgery pain. Prolonged use of opioids risks addiction, leading to an overdose. For this reason, startups are developing solutions to manage pain without the risk of addiction.

US-based biotech startup Regulonix develops non-opioid therapeutics that relieve chronic pain. The startup’s therapeutics indirectly target the neuronal sodium channels, focusing on the signaling pathways that control channel activity. As a result, the startup develops pain-relieving compounds that are non-addictive, while being more effective than morphine, and have no side effects.

IMCI offers Medical Cannabis

Patients who suffer from chronic pain due to diseases such as cancer, arthritis, and more are prescribed strong doses of opioids. While opioids give short-term relief, they often lead to addiction and compound medical issues in the long-term. Conventional opioids also have side effects and are not always 100% effective. Startups are using the pain relief properties of cannabis to develop more effective and less addictive pain treatment solutions.

Israeli startup IMCI develops cannabis-based medicines to treat neuropathic pain. IMCI operates a full value-chain of pharmaceutical cannabis-based production under SA & EU-GMP standards from seed to final product. The startup’s production process aims to provide a low-cost pain medication alternative based on cannabis.

Reducept provides Digital Pain Training

Pain management currently relies heavily on the use of opioids for relief. However, the use of techniques such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) as an alternative to opioids is on the rise. Startups are using mobile apps, VR, and other similar digital technologies to provide digital pain education and training solutions that leverage such therapies.

Netherlands-based startups Reducept provides a digital pain training platform. It provides users a science-based training routine that needs to be followed for just 10 minutes a day. The app also helps healthcare professionals to educate and monitor their patients in pain management. It trains the body to naturally manage the symptoms of pain rather than rely on medication.
