KHealth – Virtual Health Risk Assessment

During a pandemic, the slightest of symptoms cause a great deal of worry. However, consulting a doctor isn’t always a feasible option as hospitals and clinics are occupied with infected patients. Virtual health risk assessment solutions that allow people to get a quick, primary diagnosis for their symptoms alleviate their concern and ease the burden on healthcare systems.

KHealth is a US-based startup that offers personalized health information and quality care. Their solution uses artificial intelligence (AI) to personalize the diagnosis for the patient based on their age, medical history, and other demographics. If needed, the solution allows users to chat with a doctor for up to two weeks after paying a one-time fee or order medicines after validation. Currently, they are offering free chats with doctors for 14 days for suspected coronavirus cases.

AliveCor – Home Electrocardiogram (ECG) Device

In the novel coronavirus pandemic, patients with comorbidities are more likely to develop complications and be hospitalized. In addition to the elderly, this includes people who are immunocompromised, diabetic or suffer from cardiovascular or respiratory conditions. For such patients, monitoring their heartbeat to diagnose any abnormalities early is potentially life-saving, even if they do not display any symptoms yet.

AliveCor is a US-based manufacturer of medical devices for cardiac care. The company develops KardiaMobile, an FDA-cleared device that allows patients to record medical-grade electrocardiograms in just 30 seconds. The solution combines sensors that the patients need to place their fingers on and a smartphone app to detect arrhythmias. Recently, the FDA approved the use of KardiaMobile 6L to detect potentially dangerous QT prolongation in COVID-19 patients.

Your.MD – Symptom Checking Chatbot

As the coronavirus pandemic continues to disrupt healthcare systems, access to medical attention for other cases is severely restricted. This includes conditions that are treatable with off-the-shelf medicines. Free symptom checker apps and websites analyze symptoms provided by the patients to suggest possible conditions and courses of action.

The UK-based startup Your.MD builds a CE-marked digital health platform. A chatbot app, available on both Android and iOS, determines if the patient should see a doctor or self-care and provides free self-care recommendations for a large number of diseases, such as laryngitis, influenza, sinusitis, food poisoning, and COVID-19. The startup’s product, OneStep HealthTM, recommends high quality and personalized public and private health service providers if needed.

docandu – Online Consultations

While AI is getting better with time, some conditions are difficult to diagnose without a doctor. An app or chatbot may over- or underestimate some symptoms, especially if they are unique. Virtual diagnostic solutions that combine medical records and remote consultations reduce the need for hospital visits for a large number of patients.

The UK-based startup docandu provides an all-in-one app for health services. The startup uses AI and previous medical records to understand symptoms and guide patients in their next steps. The solution generates a unique medical ID for each patient that assists doctors to serve them better and also enables telehealthcare with online consultations via video/audio calls.

Mediktor – Pre-Diagnosis

During a pandemic, medical procedures that aren’t as urgent are best postponed to a later date. Pre-diagnosis helps patients understand if their condition needs assisted self-care, urgent medical intervention, or is not an urgent concern. This helps healthcare systems optimize their services as they function in a limited capacity for a few weeks to a few months.

Mediktor is a Spanish company that offers an Artificial Intelligence-based medical assistant for triage, pre-diagnosis, and decision-making support. The clinically validated symptom checker serves the insurance, pharma, and healthcare industries and offers structured data from the moment the first symptoms appear. The technology thereby reduces unnecessary crowding at clinics and hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic.

How To Flatten The Curve?

This is an unprecedented situation for many of us across the world. The SARS outbreak in the early 2000s claimed 774 lives. That toll was enough to drive research & development and easier healthcare solutions. The fact that several mobile health, e-health, remote health, and diagnostics startups and companies are able to respond during a real epidemic is encouraging. With thousands of deaths already, we expect to see numerous new companies offering technology-driven solutions to help doctors, nurses, other health workers, and the larger public.
