Sense Neuro Diagnostics – Brain Scanner

Traumatic head injuries, for example, those resulting from road traffic accidents, require urgent critical care. Advances in neurotechnology and medical devices, such as on-site diagnostic tools, enable paramedics to quickly analyze the neurological conditions of patients and make the right decisions, even before reaching the hospital. Such technologies save valuable time for medical professionals and, in the process, save more lives.

The US-based startup Sense Neuro Diagnostics develops SENSE, a non-invasive brain scanner for both field and hospital assessment. The device transmits a low-power customized electromagnetic pulse in the radio frequency (RF) range through the patient’s brain. It measures the brain tissue’s signal absorption rates to help identify strokes and traumatic brain injuries in real-time. The scanner rapidly analyzes the entire cranial vault, and also detects bleeding, to provide emergency responders with sufficient data to make life-saving decisions.

Neurallys – Intracranial Pressure Sensor

Hydrocephalus is a condition that manifests as an abnormal buildup of intracranial fluid in brain cavities. Traditional methods of managing chronic hydrocephalus include implanting a shunt to drain the excess buildup. Newer devices, such as those using Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, continuously monitor and collect intracranial pressure data. Also, they automate the draining of intracranial fluid, thus helping patients better manage chronic hydrocephalus.

French startup Neurallys builds a minimally invasive sensor for hydrocephalus treatment. The pressure sensor embeds along with the intracranial fluid draining valve and continuously monitors and collects intracranial pressure data in real-time. The sensor transmits the data via smartphones and notifies physicians in the case of any anomalies.

Neurotech – Neurofeedback Therapy

Neurofeedback, also known as neurotherapy, is a technique that enables patients to improve their behavioral and cognitive processing capabilities. It is rapidly gaining traction as a treatment of various neurological disorders such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), seizures, and anxiety disorders. Startups and scaleups are developing medical devices that utilize neurofeedback. These devices aim to help patients lead a better life, both in terms of social interactions and for improving motor skills.

Australian startup Neurotech develops neurostimulation and neurodiagnostics solutions to treat ASD in children. Mente Autism Headband, a portable electroencephalographic (EEG) medical device, uses closed-loop neurofeedback to calm children affected by ASD within four to eight weeks. Specifically, the startup uses audio feedback and earphones to relax the brain and improve focus and concentration among children.

Theranica – Neuromodulation

Migraines have a widespread impact on overall brain function. They contribute to co-morbidities in association with pain, for example, anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbances. Neuromodulation is an effective method to decrease the intensity and frequency of headaches and migraines with the help of an external stimulus, especially in children and adolescents. Startups develop neuromodulation solutions to support patients manage their pain resulting from neurological disorders.

Israeli startup Theranica creates Nerivio, a non-invasive, drug-free, and smartphone-controlled device to help manage migraines. This wearable neuromodulation device stimulates peripheral nerves in the upper arm and induces conditioned pain modulation. Nerivio inhibits pain by enabling the release of serotonin and noradrenaline in the body.

Neuranix – Veterinary Hearing Diagnostics

Sensorineural hearing loss is one of the most common neurological disorders in humans arising from aging. However, pets such as dogs and cats also face hearing problems, often more so than humans. Traditional diagnostics solutions for pets involve general anesthesia and a considerable amount of time to scan and identify underlying issues. Advances in medical diagnostics create opportunities for startups to develop innovative solutions for veterinary care, and in particular, for the efficient treatment of hearing impairment in pets.

Italian startup Neuranix builds VET-WAVE, a diagnostic tool for the functional evaluation of the eardrums and middle ears of pets, mainly dogs and cats. The device generates an acoustic pulse in the 100 to 5.000-hertz frequency spectrum to rapidly analyze the ear canal. VET-WAVE identifies perforations and lacerations in the eardrum, evaluates stapedial and tympanic reflexes, and highlights the presence of any fluid material in the middle ear. This diagnostic tool enables veterinarians to detect and treat the causes of hearing impairment.
