Our Innovation Analysts recently looked into emerging technologies and up-and-coming startups working on solutions for the healthcare sector. As there is a large number of startups working on a wide variety of solutions, we want to share our insights with you. This time, we are taking a look at 5 promising nanomedicine startups.
Heat Map: 5 Top Nanomedicine Startups
For our 5 top picks, we used a data-driven startup scouting approach to identify the most relevant solutions globally. The Global Startup Heat Map below highlights 5 interesting examples out of 305 relevant solutions. Depending on your specific needs, your top picks might look entirely different.
Bikanta – Medical Imaging
Nanoparticles have become a prevalent part of the next generation of contrast agents for medical imaging, allowing for the detection of disease indicators in a laboratory at a very early stage thus saving countless lives.
The US-based company Bikanta works with nanodiamonds. These diamonds have a special coating, that stabilizes particles for targeting agents (e.g. aptamers, antibodies, polymers) tailored to detect specific diseases. Bikanta uses the high magnetic sensitivity of fluorescent nanodiamonds to reduce the background noise in optical imaging to allow for the detection of low signals and deeper imaging into the tissues.
RS Research – Nano-Therapeutics
Nano-therapeutics enable targeted drug delivery to develop therapeutics that minimize the unwanted side effects that are otherwise caused by conventional treatments such as chemotherapy. Moreover, other characteristics of nano-therapeutics include low toxicity and increased concentration of the drug at the target site.
RS Research, a Turkish nanotechnology company, offers two platforms for targeted drug delivery. Both platforms feature highly flexible carriers: Sagitta® Bir and Sagitta® Dui. The platforms carry the drug and targeting elements and activate them only inside the targeted tumor cell, without affecting the surrounding healthy tissue.
Spago Nanomedical – Diagnostics
The detection of diseases at an earlier stage has become possible with the application of nanotechnology for diagnostics. The technology utilizes submicrometer-sized tools for detection, prevention, and treatment, to better understand diseases, and to improve the overall quality of life for patients.
The Swedish startup Spago Nanomedical develops nanomedical products for cancer diagnostics and treatment. The company works with two main products – SpagoPix, a nanomedical contrast agent for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and the therapeutic development project Tumorad, for tumor-selective radionuclide treatment.
Vaxinano – Vaccines
Researchers develop new vaccines and improve the efficiency of existing ones against specific diseases by utilizing nanomedicine. These novel vaccines are based on nanoparticles that improve vaccine efficacy to achieve the planned immune responses at the cellular level and ensure targeted delivery at a slow release rate.
The French company Vaxinano explores prophylactic and therapeutic vaccines for infectious diseases including anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-parasitic solutions, based on nanoparticles made of starch and lipids. The company also performs contract research and assists customers in their nanomedicine research & development (R&D).
OPER Technology – Regenerative Medicine
Nanotechnology considerably accelerates the growth of regenerative medicine. New concepts allow patients with organ failure or severe injuries to receive artificial skin, bone, cartilage or other tissues. The application of nanotechnology modifies the cellular function in a more desired way to mimic the action of native tissues or organs.
OPER Technology, a startup from Hong-Kong, develops technology in nanomaterial-based personalized and regenerative medicine to improve health and extend the life of patients with incurable diseases. This technology consists of nanosurgery with real-time monitoring that enables both specific cell harvests in complicated systems in the body, cell engineering and specific drug delivery to specific cells in the body.
