Our Innovation Analysts recently looked into emerging technologies and up-and-coming startups working on solutions for the automotive sector. As there is a large number of startups working on a wide variety of solutions, we want to share our insights with you. This time, we are taking a look at promising commercial vehicle automation startups.
Heat Map: 5 Top Commercial Vehicle Automation Startups
For our 5 top picks, we used a data-driven startup scouting approach to identify the most relevant solutions globally. The Global Startup Heat Map below highlights 5 interesting examples out of 216 relevant solutions. Depending on your specific needs, your top picks might look entirely different.
Locomation – Truck Platooning
Human drivers do not provide 24×7 availability for long haul transportation of goods and products. As the routine for truck drivers becomes exhaustive, it often compromises the safety of their lives and goods as well. Startups are working on autonomous solutions such as Truck Platooning to increase the efficiency of freight transportation.
The US-based startup Locomation offers Autonomous Relay Convoy™, a truck platooning platform. Upon reaching the highways, the trucks assemble into a connected convoy where a single human-driven truck acts as the lead truck. The other drivers in other trucks rest as their trucks drive themselves. The drivers take on the lead role in turns and enjoy a safer journey.
AIDRIVERS – Autonomous Luggage Trolley
Luggage handling is a monumental task at vast, crowded airports. Passengers often have to stand in long queues to check-in their luggage before they can enjoy any amenities that are available at the airport. Autonomous solutions for luggage hauling make the airport experience a little less cumbersome for passengers.
The UK-based startup AIDRIVERS develops autonomous mobility solutions for industrial challenges. Their smart trolley, AIDO XS, autonomously handles and delivers luggage like a personal luggage attendant. It eliminates the need for passengers to stand in long check-in queues and saves time.
AutoKAB – Shared Autonomous Cabs
Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) is massively changing transportation. Booking cabs or freight with a single tap on smartphones provides consumers a more personalized experience. Autonomous vehicles add the benefit of safety to the consumer experience.
The France-based startup AutoKAB develops autonomous electric vans for transportation in suburban areas and localities. These vans have a passenger capacity of 6-8 commuters and serve as office shuttles for daily passengers. Their batteries are quickly charged while the vehicles are in the parking lot.
CogniMine – Autonomous Mining
Blasting operations are very common in the mining industry – posing a great threat to miners. Autonomous solutions to minimize the need for human workers in riskier mining operations. Off-road autonomous vehicles operate in such sites and transport materials to and from the mines to reduce the burden on human workers.
The Israeli startup CogniMine provides autonomous solutions for mining vehicles. Their solution, Autonomous Mission Kit (AMK), enables existing mining vehicles to perform autonomously. It trains vehicles to work in an environment with many obstacles. The trucks collect and send information via an Operator Control Unit (OCU) while an operator in the control room governs the movement of trucks according to the task requirements.
PerceptIn – Autonomous Advertising Car
Conventional advertising methods for public spaces such as stationary billboards and screens are visible to consumers only at certain locations. Autonomous advertising vehicles make advertising mobile. These vehicles use data analytics to travel to locations where more people notice them. Moreover, they also collect feedback from the people for more customized advertising and better product development.
The China-based startup PerceptIn builds what they call the Longfei Unmanned Advertising Car. There are four screens on the vehicle that play advertisements and display various information about the store location. The vehicle also transports goods to other businesses.
