Which startups develop the other 159 solutions?

VastBiome – Drug Development

The influence of microbiota on the human immune system makes microbiome analysis vital in drug discovery, research, and development. Several big pharma companies are developing drugs by targeting the microbiome to prevent or restrict the progression of diseases. This also encourages startups to develop innovative solutions and identify potential drug candidates by mining the human microbiome.

The US-based startup VastBiome builds VBx1, a machine learning platform that analyzes the gut microbiome for drug discovery. The whole-genome shotgun sequencing technique is used to characterize the microbial metagenome involved in chemical synthesis. Based on this data, VBx1 predicts viable targets and biomarkers for developing novel immunomodulatory drugs.

Boost Biomes – Plant Microbiome Analysis

The plant microbiome, also called the phyto-microbiome, includes the genome of microbes in the soil, as well as those present inside and outside of a plant. Startups work to enhance the activity of beneficial microbes in plants, in order to improve agricultural yield and quality.

The US-based startup Boost Biomes develops a deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) sequencing, selective enrichment, and advanced informatics to build a microbiome-based discovery platform. The startup’s approach to developing microbiome-based products minimize costs for the agriculture and food sectors. Initial applications for this approach to microbiome analysis include managing diseases of high-value crops and also for extending the shelf-life of fruits and vegetables.

FOLIUM Science – Microbiome Control

The microbiome consists of both beneficial and harmful microbes. Increasing the proportion of symbiotic microbes and reducing the pathogens, without the use of antibiotics, is crucial for tackling antimicrobial resistance. This encourages and drives startups to dive deeper into understanding the microbiome and the techniques to manage or control it.

British startup FOLIUM Science offers Guided Biotics, a proprietary technology that uses biotics to control the microbiome in soils, plants, and animals. Highly specific biotics, based on clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)-associated technology, identify and target unique DNA sequences present in the targeted pathogenic and spoilage bacteria. The startup is currently developing poultry feed additives targeting all serotypes of salmonella.

REM Analytics – Microbiome Analytics

The analysis of the microbiome provides insights into the functioning of living organisms and the highly specific interactions that occur between microbiota and living things. In humans, the microbiome influences the immunity, nutrition, and overall development of the body. The human gut also contains the largest number of microbes, allowing medical professionals to explore the gut microbiome-host interaction and understand its roles in human metabolism and health.

Swiss startup REM Analytics is working on a human gut microbiome analysis based on lineage tracing. This method precisely measures the relative ratio among bacterial groups in gut microbiota. This technique results in accurate profiling of gut microbiota that, in turn, guides the development of personalized probiotics and treatment regimes. The startup also provides microbiome-based solutions for food safety and authenticity.

Anizome – Animal Microbiome Analysis

The animal microbiome helps in understanding the nature of animals at the molecular level. This helps in the pre-clinical studies of the drug discovery process, as animals are often used for comparative models of several human diseases. This comparative model also expands the options available to eliminate the use of antibiotics in farm animals.

The US-based startup Anizome provides a platform for the characterization of the animal microbiome. The startup identifies targets of interest for drug discovery and tests them in high-throughput biological models. The Anizome discovery pipeline includes drugs in the screening stage for diseases affecting several domestic animals.
