Naoden builds Combined Heat & Power Generation Plants

Nowadays, combined heat and power (CHP), or cogeneration plants, hold the potential to become a core element of distributed energy resource (DER) facilities. They also minimize energy wastage by reusing the excess combustion heat, for heating, cooling, or electricity at power generation sites. Startups create CHP installation solutions to ensure that waste heat does not spread into the environment. They achieve this by integrating with the energy cycle to increase the efficiency of power generation.

French startup Naoden designs and builds Imperium, a line of bioenergetic cogeneration power stations that simultaneously create heat and electricity. It consists of two components: a gasification unit and an energy production unit. The former converts wood biomass into synthetic gas, while the latter valorizes the gas to generate heat and electricity. Consequently, Naoden’s solution lowers energy expenditures and addresses sustainability issues by maintaining an entire biomass recycling chain.

SunOyster manufactures Solar Concentrators

Governments and enterprises globally are focusing on moving from fossil fuel-based energy production to renewable sources of energy. Among the sources of green energy, solar is most easily accessible while not requiring extensive infrastructure. Solar concentrators are seeing increased development due to their low costs and high efficiency in generating heat and electrical energy. Moreover, such solar solutions find applications in multiple industries and for different purposes.

German startup SunOyster specializes in the development and manufacturing of solar concentrators. The core of their solar harvesting products is the 4m long patented receiver. The receiver converts solar energy to electric, with an efficiency of 30%, and to thermal, with an efficiency of 45%. Additionally, the system features tracking of the sun’s position and elevation of the mirror’s position. The application of their solar converter extends to room heating, desalination, process heat, ORC machines, high-temperature storage, preheating of steam power plants, and more.

WindFarmDesigns (WFD) optimizes Wind Farm Layouts

Wind farm layouts directly impact the profitability and efficiency of wind energy. Therefore, it is vital to employ techniques, such as micro-siting or wind plant design modeling, to optimize designs prior to construction. AI and simulation software advance the design and planning of various wind farm aspects. This includes blade and rotor capacity and load scenarios, as well as wind hub location and infrastructure requirements. This solves location-specific uncertainties, minimizes losses, and maximizes energy efficiency for the physical wind farm.

WindFarmDesigns is a Norwegian scaleup maximizing energy yield and ensures load compliance through its web-based layout solution for wind farms. ParkOptimizer, the company’s main product, provides a range of wind farm layouts for utilities to choose the ideal one for their needs. ParkOptimizer further uses the WFD API, a general wind farm layout optimization algorithm, to generate International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC)-compliant layouts. Further, the WFD web application, WFD Web, allows users to upload their Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) data and then quickly obtain the ideal layout without installing other software.

Dandelion works on Geothermal Heating & Cooling

Geothermal technology relies on the heating and cooling imbalances between the house and the earth. By utilizing smart valves, throttle controls, and pipes, geothermal systems heat the house during the winter and cool it during the summer. Driving the shift from using fossil fuels for heating, startups develop geothermal heating and cooling solutions, creating new applications for renewable energy.

US-based startup Dandelion offers geothermal energy generation services for residential buildings. The startup provides home heating, air conditioning, and hot water supply using weather-proof underground pipes and heat pumps. Relying on the Earth’s temperature, Dandelion’s geothermal heating and cooling system provide homeowners with an alternative to fossil fuels.
