Vara – Breast Cancer Diagnostics

The early detection of breast cancer allows medical professionals to offer treatment options without the requirement of chemotherapy. Increased awareness of cancer treatments is one of the reasons encouraging patients to get regularly tested for cancer. The early diagnosis of breast cancer saves significant costs for healthcare providers and improves healthcare outcomes for patients. Hence startups develop machine learning-based diagnostic solutions for the early detection of breast cancer.

German startup Vara leverages machine learning to create a platform that integrates with the breast cancer workflows to scan and analyze indicators of breast cancer. Within the platform, normal breast scans are marked so that radiologists can shift their focus to scans that actually require their attention. Vara also seamlessly reports suspicious findings directly on the mammogram image to enable effective clinical decision making.

Bolt Biotherapeutics – Immuno-Oncology

The human immune system sometimes malfunctions and requires artificial stimulation to tackle serious problems such as breast cancer. Immuno-oncological advances enable medical professionals to treat breast cancer even in its later stages with the help of targeted drug delivery solutions. Startups and scaleups develop solutions that boost the human immune system to tackle malignant breast tumors.

The US-based startup Bolt Biotherapeutics develops BDC-1001, which targets HER2 in breast cancer and is built on the Boltbody immune-stimulating antibody conjugate (ISAC) platform. The solution improves treatment outcomes for patients exhibiting HER2-expressing tumors. The conjugates delivered act only in tumor microenvironments and trigger localized anti-tumor immune cascade in patients. This approach is an effective treatment of breast (and gastric) cancer.

Hera-MI – Clinical Decision Support Software

Diagnostic technology provides high-quality imaging that requires analysis. Radiologists who work on identifying anomalies in mammograms need significantly less time to analyze these images with the help of artificial intelligence. Further, clinical decision support algorithms and software help reduce the time clinicians take in creating treatment plans. Startups develop AI-based software solutions to automate and support clinical decision making.

French startup Hera-MI develops the AI-based breast cancer diagnosis solution Breast-SlimView. The solution is a patented clinical decision support software for 2D and 3D mammography. Breast-SlimView’s algorithm automatically detects normal physiological areas including vessels, glandular tissue, fatty tissue & mammary gland and masks the healthy areas in the breasts. This process, called “negativation”, decreases time spent on non-problematic areas so radiologists can spend extra time on complex ones. The solution is CE-certified and currently available in Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa.

Odonate Therapeutics – Oral Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy has numerous side effects that decrease the patient’s quality of life. Advancements in drug development, however, enable pharma companies to manufacture novel chemotherapy drugs that are administered orally instead of intravenously. This form of chemotherapy has limited side effects in comparison to traditional chemo drugs due to the targeted delivery of drugs. Startups develop innovative chemo drug delivery mechanisms to improve overall healthcare delivery.

The US-based startup Odonate Therapeutics develops Tesetaxel, an investigational and orally administered chemotherapy drug. The startup’s solution is highly soluble and has a longer terminal plasma half-life compared to conventional chemotherapy drugs. The increased half-life of approximately 8 days significantly reduces the number of hospital visits for the patient. Tesetaxel – in comparison to conventional chemotherapy – has limited side effects, improves the quality of life for patients in terms of medication usage and hospital visits.

Kheiron Medical – Breast Cancer Screening

Women who take regular mammograms have a significantly higher chance of catching breast cancer early on. Medical imaging and diagnostics advancements leverage artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning algorithms to automate tumor identification in order not to overlook them even in its early stages. Using this technology, startups and scaleups develop breast cancer screening solutions that enable clinicians to spend more time on critical cases.

British startup Kheiron Medical offers Mia (Mammography Intelligent Assessment), a breast cancer screening solution. The solution leverages deep learning algorithms to comb through mammography images and provide automated insights that a radiologist would provide. To date, Kheiron Medical has used over 3 million images for Mia to learn from, thereby enabling the solution to detect breast cancer with high accuracy and a minimal number of false positives.
