Virtuoso develops Endoscopic Surgery Robots

Surgeons use rigid endoscopes in almost every area of surgery including neurologic, thoracic, orthopedic, urologic, and gynecologic procedures. However, traditional endoscopic instruments limit motion range and often fail to reach intricate areas. To solve this challenge, HealthTech startups are manufacturing surgery robots that enhance traditional rigid endoscopes. Thus, providing surgeons with improved minimally invasive options even for difficult areas.

US-based startup Virtuoso offers endoscopic surgery robots. The system consists of two robotically controlled, needle-sized manipulators that are placed on the tip of a rigid endoscope. It thereby replaces straight tools in rigid endoscopic procedures and enables the surgeon to grasp, manipulate, and cut tissue with much more dexterity. Moreover, Virtuoso’s robotic manipulators are many times smaller than traditional robotic surgical instruments. This enables surgeons to take care of previously unreachable areas of the body.

Mynutia advances Robotic Assistance for Eye Surgery

The eyes are one of the most delicate organs in the human body which makes surgeries on them very difficult. While robots are already being used in this domain, issues such as hand tremors of the surgeon, eye rotations of the patient, and restricted movement of the robots are still persistent. Additionally, most of the robots require a joystick to operate, reducing the surgeon’s control over the procedure. To tackle this problem, startups are developing high-precision robots.

Mynutia is a startup based out of Belgium that provides robotic assistance for eye surgery. The startup’s high-precision robots enable hand tremor compensation and prevent eye rotation as well as prolonged tool immobilization. Moreover, in contrast to conventional surgical robots, surgeons do not need to use joysticks to operate Mynutia’s robots. This allows surgeons to retain direct control of the instrument and its motion during the procedures.

Aura manufactures Robotic Exoskeletons

Shoulder injuries often cause disabilities, lower quality of life, and inability to work. Moreover, each injury requires specific treatment including rehabilitation therapy through prescribed exercises to regain mobility. To advance these therapies, startups are providing robotic exoskeletons. They not only help the patients with movements but also feed kinematic data about their movements into 3D models. Thus providing information about the condition of the musculoskeletal system and its scope for recovery.

Spanish startup Aura develops a robotic exoskeleton, ORTE, made for the upper limbs. It is designed as an aide for rehab therapists. The 3D musculoskeletal model of the arm allows a practitioner to evaluate the condition of a patient and gain insight for the diagnosis process via a real-time kinematic data acquisition system. This lets the therapist create a customized rehabilitation routine for each patient guided by the robot as well as monitor progress during execution.

Interactive Robotics offers Companion Robots

While robots are not yet capable of replacing human care providers, social robots act as good support in healthcare. Healthcare providers do not always have enough time for social activities but these activities are important for the patients’ recovery. As a result, startups are developing robots to perform those tasks. For example, robots entertain the patients and keep them happy, thus making their stay at the hospital more comfortable and pleasant.

Interactive Robotics is a Dutch startup that makes companion robots for people who need care. These robots guide people with a disorder, act as a companion for an elderly person, or perform the role of an activator for people with dementia by playing games or demonstrating movements. They are also useful in home care for rehabilitating patients by preventing loneliness, stimulating movement, engaging in social activities, or reminding them of doctor’s appointments.

Robotise provides Delivery Robots for Hospitals

Hospital and healthcare staff need to deal with various errands such as getting medicines from the pharmacy, carrying food for the patients, depositing samples in laboratories, and more. These mundane activities eat up the time that could be invested in higher-value tasks. So, to assist the professionals and free up their time, startups are manufacturing service robots that transport goods in hospitals and care facilities. This lowers the medical and nursing staff’s workload so that they have more time for their patients.

German startup Robotise offers JEEVES, a delivery robot for hospitals. JEEVES has individually loadable drawers and can service several drop-off points or service stations in one run. It performs routine deliveries such as taking materials from the storeroom or the pharmacy to the service points or helps by taking samples from the ward to the laboratory. When it completes a task, it returns to its charging point and waits for the next assignment.
