CERT provides Carbon Dioxide (CO2) as a Feedstock

The current systems for emission control for manufacturing units try to reduce the generation of pollutants and prevent them from reaching the atmosphere. These methods require considerable investments and offer no economic value to the final product. This is why startups and scaleups are developing solutions that utilize emissions to create useful material. With carbon dioxide being the major pollutant, these solutions advance decarbonization.

Canadian startup CERT develops an electrochemical system to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. It utilizes a membrane electrode assembly of electrochemical cells to convert carbon dioxide into a renewable source of fuels and materials. The system’s optimum design of catalysts on its cathodes and anodes ensures CO2 conversion at an efficient rate. The system’s cell design and fabrication enable tackling carbon emissions for a variety of manufacturing units.

Lohum enables Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling

Electric batteries are crucial in the transition towards renewable and green manufacturing operations. But battery manufacturing processes are highly energy-intensive and utilize materials that contribute to carbon dioxide emissions during extraction and transportation. This is why startups and scaleups are offering battery recycling solutions.

Lohum is an Indian startup that develops lithium-ion battery recycling technology. It extracts battery materials for reuse, avoiding the carbon emissions for extracting new materials from mines. The reclaimed materials are of higher quality than traditional mining and are ready for use in the process to manufacture new batteries. This offers multiple lives for batteries as well as provides battery manufacturing companies with a renewable and low-carbon source of raw materials.

GrapheneCR provides Green Graphene

Graphene is a useful additive for manufacturing composites, polymers, epoxy resins, lubricants, and batteries. But the complicated production process of graphene increases its carbon footprint and, consequently, affects the carbon rating of the products made with it. This is why startups are developing technologies for sustainable graphene production.

GrapheneCR is a US-based startup that provides green renewable graphene. The startup utilizes its patented biomass feedstock conversion process resulting in extremely pure, high quality, and highly consistent, yet distinct carbon materials. ProCene and ProCNano, the startup’s carbon-negative graphene powders, are equivalent to commercially available graphene powders made using conventional graphite-based methods. By reducing the carbon footprint of graphene production, the startup provides manufacturing companies with a clean source of graphene-based additives.

GreenCap Solutions advances Direct Air Capture

Manufacturing units still depend on fossil fuels for meeting local power requirements, especially for transportation equipment and process heating. This greatly elevates the carbon footprint of these units. Controlling the emission from each of these equipment requires additional modifications and also reduces the operational efficiency. This is why startups and scaleups are providing solutions that capture emissions from the atmosphere.

Norwegian startup GreenCap Solutions develops direct air capture (DAC) technology. It captures carbon dioxide from ambient air via adsorption of CO2 using an optimized zeolite adsorbent. GreenCap’s zeolite adsorbent provides a high surface area and a variety of pore sizes, which substantially increases the efficiency of CO2 adsorption. The startup’s DAC system is scalable to meet the decarbonization requirements of industrial units of various capacities.

Emitwise offers a Carbon Accounting Platform

The carbon footprint of a manufacturing business is not limited to its production facility. Various upstream and downstream operations also emit carbon dioxide, which is challenging for businesses to accurately monitor. This has a major impact on companies’ sustainability tracking, making it difficult to accommodate the regulatory norms set by the government. To this end, startups and scaleups are offering carbon accounting solutions that enable businesses to closely monitor their carbon footprint.

Emitwise is a UK-based startup providing a carbon accounting platform for sustainability tracking. It collects data on the direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions and removals as well as calculates the carbon dioxide equivalents. It allows businesses to measure, report, and reduce the carbon footprint of their operations and supply chain. The solution also automates this data collection. Furthermore, Emitwise creates dashboards that identify carbon hotspots, set targets to reduce them, and track sustainability progress easily and clearly.
