Jolt Energy offers Organic Redox Flow Batteries

As compared to the conventional lithium-ion (Li-Ion) batteries, redox flow batteries usually provide a longer life cycle, quicker response time, lower emissions, and easier maintenance. Such batteries typically do not contain flammable electrolytes and hence are safer. Therefore, startups develop flow battery solutions for industrial and other large-scale applications, such as mass production.

US-based startup Jolt Energy offers organic redox flow batteries to the market. The startup’s sustainable energy storage solutions enable utilities to capture energy from renewable sources using solar panels and wind farms and reliably deliver that energy as soon as it is needed. Jolt Energy’s organic redox flow battery uses carbon-based compounds which are specifically designed for this purpose. Moreover, the battery does not require a highly acidic electrolyte, making it safer to use. The batteries also offer a higher operating voltage and 3-4 times the energy density of conventional battery sy2018, Coeur d’Alene, USA) stems.

KORE power develops Sustainable Energy Storage Systems

Conventional batteries release carbon dioxide (CO2) and other toxic gases into the environment. With the increasing climate change emergency, manufacturers are developing more sustainable batteries to lower the produced emissions. In particular, startups develop nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. These cells work at lower temperatures and higher thermal stability, thereby emitting fewer emissions in the environment.

US-based startup KORE Power offers sustainable battery storage solutions. The startup designs and manufactures tier 1 energy storage optimized by Battery Management System (BMS). The startup also offers proprietary NMC batteries and LFP cells. KORE Power’s batteries do not emit CO2 while in use, and therefore, they are more environmentally friendly as compared to the batteries that use substitutes like lithium and lead.

Energy Renaissance offers Heat-Resistant Lithium-Ion Batteries

Commercial applications at times need the batteries to work at very high or very low temperatures. Such extreme temperatures lead to degradation of performance of batteries and irreversible damages such as lithium plating and thermal runaway. To mitigate this, startups are manufacturing heat-resistant batteries.

Australian startup Energy Renaissance designs and builds heat-resistant lithium-ion batteries optimized for hot climates. The startup’s Renaissance superCube offers safe grid-scale lithium-ion battery storage of 1MWh. The battery offers a reduced carbon footprint and improved heat mitigation. Their plug-and-play product is capable of daisy-chaining and has relatively higher energy density storage as compared to other lithium solutions. The startup provides other proprietary energy storage systems like Renaissance superRack and Renaissance superPak for industrial applications.

Delectrik offers Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries

Industries for mass production, like those manufacturing locomotives and machine tools, need durable batteries for 24×7 operational work. The extremely large capacity and durability possible from vanadium redox batteries make them well suited to use in such large power storage applications. Hence, startups develop vanadium batteries for large-scale applications.

Indian startup Delectrik offers vanadium redox flow batteries for large-scale applications. The batteries offered by the startup range from 40 kWh to 200 kWh capacity. The battery consists of two layers, where the proprietary flow battery forms the core layer. The application layer offers scalable and flexible energy storage based on customer requirements. The batteries find applications in telecommunication, energy, microgrids, and other small and large-scale industries.

Echion manufactures Niobium Oxide-based Batteries

With the growing need for better energy storage systems, scientists and engineers are working on new types of batteries. These batteries don’t rely on lithium, a commonly used battery material. The newer batteries use non-conventional materials like sodium and niobium to build them. Such batteries have a proven record of fast charging and more energy density as compared to lithium batteries.

British startup Echion offers niobium-based anode materials for industrial and e-mobility purposes. Echion’s anode materials rely on proprietary mixed niobium oxide technology. Their batteries are capable of charging in 6 minutes, work on safer operating voltages, and have high energy density as compared to conventional battery systems like those of nickel, lead, and lithium.
