Zhyphen creates Energy Storage Solutions

Smart grids enable distributed energy production, mainly from renewable sources. However, most sustainable energy resources, like wind or solar power plants, depend on ideal environmental conditions. Energy storage, which forms another important part of smart grids, expands the use of renewable energy to support rising energy demand. Moreover, such solutions are deployable at remote or off-grid locations and are also useful in disaster-hit regions.

Zhyphen is a British startup creating a range of solutions for smart grids. The startup’s energy storage systems (ESS) utilize solar, wind, or other renewable energy sources to eliminate energy poverty and reduce carbon emissions. Additionally, Zhyphen provides a battery management system (BMS) that constantly monitors the condition of the battery cells. This enables connectivity to district network operators (DNOs) and creates revenue streams such as demand-side response (DSR) or frequency balancing.

Adaptive Balancing Power provides Low-Loss Flywheel Energy Storage

Traditional batteries have limited recharge cycles, which in turn reduces their lifespan in addition to operating under a narrow range of temperatures. Batteries also contain dangerous chemicals, such as lead and corrosive acids that are harmful to the environment. That is why startups are developing energy storage solutions based on flywheel technology. Since flywheels are made of chemically inert materials, they are environmentally safe and work under wider environmental conditions.

German startup Adaptive Balancing Power creates low-loss flywheel energy storage for microgrids, railway, and electric refueling stations. The startup’s solution uses carbon fiber rotors that allow for high-speed rotation and store up to 12 kWh of electricity. Further, magnetic bearings and a high-vacuum environment make storage more energy-efficient and sustainable. By using the flywheel technology for power transmission and distribution, the startup enables inertia and voltage regulation, as well as black start capabilities and islanding of individual grid sections.

AmpereHour Energy offers Energy Management Software

Energy startups are looking for ways to effectively manage smart grid infrastructure. These include solutions for prolonging the lifetime of the hardware, avoiding overloads, and sustaining an uninterrupted power supply. Importantly, prolonging battery life helps in reducing environmental pollution after their disposal.

Indian startup AmpereHour Energy develops both software and hardware solutions for smart grids. On the hardware side, the startup provides Grid-lock, a pre-assembled energy storage system for renewable and off-grid operations. Their software, Elina, is a Machine Learning (ML)-based energy management platform that allows multi-asset aggregation, optimization, and control for a variety of battery and inverter technologies. The software optimizes the energy dispatch in real-time to help users maximize value from their hardware.

Doorastha enables Smart Grid Monitoring

Startups are developing smarter ways to monitor energy generation and consumption. For example, tracking solar power generation and subsequent storage into batteries alerts grid operators in case of faults. This results in higher reliability of energy systems. On the consumption side, smaller grids enable efficient management of clean energy to help offset energy bills.

Indian startup Doorastha creates grid controllers, monitors, and software to manage clean energy production and distribution for small grids. Doorastha provides Grid Controller to allow operators to track power generation and storage consumption, as well as optimize system performance. Then, the startup’s iLUMY smart meter monitors energy usage at the consumer end of a microgrid. Lastly, the startup’s Enabler App allows consumers to manage smart meters and pay for electricity.

Tvinn optimizes Electrical Grids

Transportation, one of the important industries in the modern economy, is also one of the most polluting ones. This is why startups are innovating with electric vehicles (EVs). However, electrical grids are currently not robust enough to provide energy for EVs during peak hours. Energy startups are developing solutions to optimize energy consumption and distribution, sustain reliable power supply, and encourage the use of electrical vehicles.

Tvinn is a Swedish startup that develops a smart grid optimization platform. It balances, prioritizes, and schedules energy to charge vehicles, power a nearby house, or even sell energy back to the grid. Tvinn`s system is a hybrid smart charging solution, as well as an energy management system, predicting how much energy each vehicle needs by learning over time how the fleet behaves. It then maps this information with available power, optimizing energy storage and local energy production when the grid capacity is insufficient. The startup’s solution serving both vehicle or facility owners and transport operators.
