Grandperspecive performs Industrial Gas Leak Monitoring

Fugitive emissions contribute to the loss of valuable hydrocarbons and other gases, as well as contribute to greenhouse emissions. Even though fugitive emissions are generally a tiny proportion of a company’s net emissions, stringent environmental regulations mean that companies seek to minimize these as well. Moreover, undetected leaks pose a health hazard to the workers. This is why startups are developing a range of industrial gas leak monitoring solutions.

Grandperspective is a German startup enabling remote monitoring of hazardous gas emissions. The startup’s monitoring solution, scanfeld, uses scanning, imaging, and remote sensing to detect and identify over 400 different chemicals. Since it detects the infrared spectra, the measurements are not affected by weather conditions or lack of ambient light. The solution optimizes high-risk and large areas for speed and high spatial resolution, respectively.

LongPath Technologies develops Laser-based Methane Monitoring

In regions rich in oil and gas (O&G) deposits, hundreds of companies often operate close together. In such cases, it is incredibly difficult to detect leaks or, when detected, to pinpoint their origin. Sensor startups are costly to install across thousands of assets with many kilometers of pipelines. Laser-based monitoring solutions, on the contrary, enable the quantification of fugitive gases over large areas at low costs.

LongPath Technologies is a US-based startup offering a methane leak monitoring solution for the oil and gas industry. It uses long-range laser systems to continuously localize and quantify methane emissions over large areas. It detects the distinct absorption fingerprints of different molecules across a wide wavelength spectrum. The startup’s automated solution covers up to 30.000 acres and also enables the monitoring of dozens of facilities in a region.

Bluefield provides Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Data

As companies look to become more sustainable and ethical in their operations, they are adopting ESG data practices in their production processes. However, most companies use historical data which doesn’t present a full picture of their carbon footprint. Moreover, fugitive emissions may not be included in the historical records due to a lack of reliable ways to quantify them. With the development of solutions to monitor fugitive emissions, they are increasingly becoming a part of ESG data reporting.

US-based startup Bluefield combines satellite imagery and artificial intelligence (AI) to generate ESG data. The startup’s solution integrates data from satellites, ground sensors, and government records, among other data sources. It provides independent ESG data, including methane emissions, on 4 million assets and 120,000 companies worldwide. In 2020, the startup detected a pipeline leak amounting to 300 metric tons of methane in Florida.

Arolytics enables Emissions Management

Startups and scaleups across the oil & gas (O&G) industry are looking for ways to reduce emissions. However, as their net emissions from other sources decrease, fugitive emissions become a greater share of their emissions. Moreover, emissions mitigation strategies are generally unable to deal with fugitive emissions from leaks, flaring, or evaporation. This is why startups are developing new emission management programs that assess the impact of fugitive emissions as well.

Canadian startup Arolytics provides alternative fugitive emissions management programs (alt-FEMPs) for businesses. AROviz, the startup’s emissions software, aggregates emissions data and assesses the impact of emission reduction initiatives. It also helps plan fugitive emissions campaigns and tracks their progress. Lastly, it automatically generates regulatory compliance reports for methane emissions.

MIRICO offers Fugitive Emissions Monitoring

Leaks are not captured in traditional systems that quantify emissions at certain sites in an industrial setup. Moreover, it is often difficult to quantify fugitive emissions from a particular asset, such as fugitive methane emissions from an agri-food unit. This is why startups are developing fugitive emissions monitoring solutions that detect all sources of fugitive gases. With real-time alerts, such solutions enable quick resolution of leaks.

British startup MIRICO develops solutions to detect, localize, and quantify fugitive emissions. The startup’s solution enables autonomous monitoring over large industrial sites. It maintains safe operations while reducing the environmental impact of industrial operations. The startup monitors biomethane leaks from landfills and anaerobic digesters, as well as measures the emissions in agricultural activities.
