Aker Carbon Capture provides Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS)

CCUS involves capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) from refinery emissions and converting it to other fuels and materials, or storing underground. In the oil & gas industry, captured CO2 is mostly used for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and also in the production of methane from methane-gas-hydrates. CCUS is increasingly becoming essential in the O&G industry to reduce carbon emissions and decarbonize the production process.

Aker Carbon Capture is a Norwegian startup working on solutions to capture CO2 from refineries, offshore platforms, and industrial operations. To reduce the carbon emissions, Aker builds a full-scale solution that uses a mixture of water and organic amine solvents to absorb the CO2. Further, the startup’s technology creates a modular and compact carbon capture unit, called Just Catch, that converts waste to energy. The startup’s solution is cost-effective and is easily adaptable to old & new facilities like offshore platforms and floating production storage & offloading (FPSO) barges.

SEM removes Harmful Chemicals from Produced Water

Hydraulic fracturing is one of the most used technologies for producing oil from tight formations like shale. This process uses about 99% water for the preparation of fracturing fluid. Out of this, about 90-95% is reproduced during extraction. This typically contains hazardous chemicals and hydrocarbons that cannot be directly released into the ecosystem. Therefore, this is treated to remove all the hydrocarbons from it & make it reliable to release into the environment. Startups design chemical compositions that convert the hydrocarbons in produced water to non-harmful fluids or coagulates. As a result, emerging solutions remove harmful chemicals and solids from produced water.

SEM is a Scottish scaleup offering various solutions for treating produced water in the oil & gas industry. The startup’s solutions include DRAM filtration, I-DAF, a mechanical de-watering module (MDM), and a water quality meter. These solutions remove the total dissolved solids (TDS), total suspended solids (TSS), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), heavy metals, and free oil residue from produced water. These solutions remove harmful hydrocarbons from produced water and separate contaminated solids from the liquid. Through this process, the startup enables oil & gas companies to reduce the cost of waste disposal.

Divigas designs Hydrogen Separation Membranes

Hydrogen separation membranes are useful in refineries and distillation towers to separate the CO2, hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and methane (CH4) from the fluids. These membranes remove greenhouse gases (GHGs) from the fuel before sending it to consumer stations. Recently, many innovations in the formulation of membranes, like polymer-based membranes and metallic membranes, improve adsorption processes. These membranes are faster and more effective compared to traditional methods like scrubbing.

Divigas is a Singapore-based startup designing an industrial membrane called Divi-H Membrane for hydrogen recovery in off-gas feed. The hydrogen purification solution utilizes separation membranes to easily capture hydrogen sulfites & contaminants and also enables carbon capture and storage (CCS). The Divi-H Membrane reduces the cost of the CO2 separation process by using ‘blue’ hydrogen. In addition to being is cost-effective, the solution is highly tolerant to harsh gases and removes syngases, up to 99.95% pure.

Savusol converts CO2 to Fuel

Industries like oil and gas that produce higher amounts of CO2 are inventing novel methods to convert CO2 into other fuels. Usually, the conversion of CO2 results in methanol. Further, methanol easily mixes in water. This makes it useful in natural gas pipelines to solubilize the gas hydrates formed during transportation.

Savusol is a US-based startup providing technology to convert CO2 into fuels. The startup’s hydrothermal vent carbon capture HVCCU systems capture CO2 from the atmosphere, cryogenic units, and seawater. Then, the water is split into hydrogen & oxygen and CO2 is combined with the hydrogen to form methanol. Moreover, the startup’s HVCCU system is capable of removing two million pounds of carbon dioxide per day from the environment. The startup helps create a global carbon recycling economy and avoids disruption of existing energy industries.

Ocean infinity builds Low-Emission Fleet Robotics

Both the onshore and offshore O&G use many kinds of terrestrial and subsea robots to automate drilling, survey, and maintain infrastructure. Moreover, subsea operations for pipeline laying and seismic mapping uses exploration ships, explosives, and geophones, which affect the marine ecosystem. Startups work to minimize or remove these ships and explosives and reduce the maritime carbon footprint.

Ocean Infinity is a US-based startup that is building a fleet of uncrewed vessels. The startup’s low-emission fleet robots provide effective and sustainable inspection, repair, and maintenance (IRM), as well as seabed surveys for O&G companies. The startup offers its products Inspect, Map, Locate & Shuttle. Together, the solutions Inspect & Map help offshore oil and gas companies move towards carbon-neutral energy production.
