Cirqle Biomedical – Cervical Contraceptive

Family planning is possible either by using medications, through surgeries, medical devices, or even naturally by understanding the fertility cycle of women. Traditional contraceptives such as intrauterine devices (IUDs) are highly invasive, sometimes causing infections. However, advances in BioTech, including targeted medication, enable startups to develop innovative, minimally invasive, and fast-reacting contraceptive solutions that allow women to plan their family without harmful side effects.

Danish startup Cirqle Biomedical creates OUI, a vaginal capsule that rapidly dissolves and releases its formulation after insertion. The startup promises effective contraception without harmful side effects within a minute of administering OUI. A molecule in the formulation reacts with cervical mucus and reinforces it to make it impenetrable by sperm cells. The trapped sperm cells are then deactivated in the vaginal cavity where pH levels are not conducive.

Contraline – Male Contraception

Condoms are one of the most popular methods of contraception that men use. Although condoms provide effective protection against pregnancies and transmission of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), the latex material of the condom can cause allergic reactions. Additionally, many male partners rely on their female partners for contraception or birth control due to a lack of alternatives to condoms. However, pharmacological male contraceptive solutions enable men to more proactively contribute to the family planning process.

The US-based startup Contraline develops ADAM, an injectable hydrogel that provides men with long-lasting contraception. The startup’s solution is injected into the vas deferens and blocks the pathway of the sperm cells. ADAM is long-lasting, non-hormonal, minimally invasive, and is easily administrable making it an effective form of male contraception.

Ovy – App for Tracking Menstrual Cycles

Natural family planning, otherwise known as fertility awareness, enables women to understand when they have a high chance of getting pregnant. This method also works in favor of women who want to get pregnant. To this end, smartphone applications collect menstrual cycle data which is then analyzed by algorithms to provide detailed insights for women to plan their families in the comfort of their homes.

German startup Ovy builds a mobile application that effectively tracks menstrual cycles. The app enables women to understand their fertility cycles, in turn helping them plan or prevent pregnancies. Additionally, the startup offers the Ovy Bluetooth Basal Thermometer that integrates daily temperature data with the Ovy app to provide insights into ovulation cycles, fertility levels, and predict the next period.

Eli Health – Hormonal Profiling Device

Couples who are aware of the different methods of contraception make use of a plethora of solutions such as birth control pills and minimally invasive device solutions for family planning. However, the continuous use of birth control pills creates hormonal imbalances that can affect women’s health in the long term. Personal ways to track hormone levels, for example through mobile applications and medical devices, significantly reduce the number of needed visits to gynecologists and empowers women to take appropriate precautions from the comfort of their homes.

Canadian startup Eli Health provides a point-of-care device for women to plan pregnancies. The startup’s patent-pending technology measures hormones in women’s saliva to find differences in fertility levels and provide actionable insights. Additionally, the device connects to an algorithm-based app that interprets the user’s actual hormone variations on any given day. Equipped with the knowledge of their precise fertile days, women can plan their families.

My Virtual Planning (MVP) – Preventing Teenage Pregnancies

Large scale awareness programs about family planning and the benefits of using contraception educate the masses in many developing nations. Teenage pregnancies usually lead to further complications such as preeclampsia, anemia, premature delivery, and delivering at low birth weight. Startups develop digital solutions to negate the societal stigma surrounding the use of contraceptives.

Based out of Congo, My Virtual Planning develops MyViP, a digital platform that spreads awareness on preventing pregnancies in Africa. The startup’s solution enables young adults in Africa to learn about safe ways to avoid unwanted pregnancies and empowers women to handle unwanted pregnancies with confidence. Further, the startup customizes the specificity of the family planning solution to offer each couple a contraceptive that corresponds to their appropriate socio-cultural and biological profiles.
