Re-Fresh Global facilitates Textile Waste Recycling

With the increasing adaptation of fast fashion, textile waste is increasing. However, the present waste management solutions for the textile industry include dumping and incineration, both of which cause negative environmental impacts. Thus, startups are developing circular waste management solutions to minimize textile dumping by reintroducing it into the textile supply chain.

Israeli startup Re-Fresh Global turns textile waste into industrial and consumer products. The startup provides an urban micro-factory for textile waste recycling, which collects, sorts, separates, and recycles textile waste. It is then upcycled into new clothes, fabrics, construction material, or nano-cellulose. This facilitates the transition to a circular economy while reducing costs for landfill management.

M8 Sustainable enables Construction Waste Resource Recovery

The linear approach to construction materials works on the concept of ‘make-use-dispose’, which creates a challenge for resource sustainability. Moreover, a combination of aging infrastructure and improper disposal of construction debris further adds to the industry’s environmental impact. To overcome these challenges, startups are providing solutions that enable resource recovery for construction companies.

Australian startup M8 Sustainable provides waste management and resource recovery solutions for the construction industry. The startup removes demolition material and industrial waste to recycle them in its waste management facilities. Then, it provides recycled products to the civil market for construction use and trades commodities recovered from its material recovery facilities, enabling sustainable waste management.

Precycles advances Plastic Waste Upcycling

Plastic waste deteriorates into fragments through wear and tear. However, breaking down their polymer chains into other smaller components requires high temperatures for specific plastic grades which makes recycling plastic a challenging task. To tackle this, startups are offering solutions to improve plastic waste recycling.

Precycles is an Israeli startup that provides Precycler, a smart robotic bin to upcycle plastic waste. Precycler uses artificial intelligence and 3D printing to turn plastic waste into a commodity at the consumer location. Its micro-robotic arms, controlled by adaptive detection and recognition algorithms, are based on computer-vision and deep-learning techniques to dismantle plastic objects into their individual components. The system then deposits the flakes into built-in buckets. Users also redeem deposit fees for feeding bottles to the bin.

Hofitech offers Wastewater Recycling

Presently, available wastewater treatment technologies are expensive, inefficient, and hazardous due to their inability to efficiently segregate various waste types. This involves the detection of various scrap metals and metal oxides, among others, in the wastewater. Segregating organic and inorganic materials also facilitates better handling of wastewater effluents. Thus, startups are developing solutions to enable selective wastewater resource recovery and management.

Hofitech is a Slovakian startup that enables waste recycling by linking scrap metal, wastewater, and high-tech metal oxide treatment. The startup’s solution uses consumables made of scrap metal to transform wastewater into clean water, valuable ceramic powders, and pigments of industrial use. It processes heavily polluted industrial wastewater and waste, reducing waste emissions and facilitating cost-effective wastewater treatment. Hofitech provides a circular economy approach for wastewater treatment to industries that produce waste as well as wastewater management companies.

Pyrocycle facilitates e-Waste Recycling

Electronic waste management is challenging since the recycling process pollutes the water, soil, and air. Further, retrieving metals from wires and cables by burning leads to the emission of chlorinated dioxins and carcinogens that pollute the air. Therefore, to minimize the negative environmental impact of e-waste recycling, startups are formulating sustainable solutions.

Canadian startup Pyrocycle develops a thermochemical process to recycle end-of-life electronic waste. The startup’s solution enables the recovery of precious metals from electronic scrap and is also non-polluting. This allows municipalities, telecommunications companies, and sorting facilities to manage electronic waste effectively and reduce e-waste dumping.
