OpSense offers Remote Food Monitoring

Monitoring high stacks of perishable products in grocery and convenience stores is complex due to the large volume and footprint. With a variety of products that differ in storage requirements, manual food monitoring becomes hard and time-intensive. Therefore, startups are developing remote food condition monitoring solutions for applications in grocery and convenience stores.

US-based startup OpSense provides remote monitoring and reporting solutions for food management. The startup integrates sensors in critical areas of operation like freezers, storage, doors, and lighting, as well as heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Then, the solution sends notifications when it detects anomalies in temperature thresholds set by grocers or store operators. The alerts are available as emails, text messages, or automated phone calls. OpSense’s solution is also applicable for restaurants looking to improve inventory maintenance and compliance.

Oliveex advances Sensor-based Food Monitoring

Fermentation monitoring is critical for many food products like sausages, yogurt, cheese, and soy sauce, among others. The current food fermentation monitoring process uses continuous sample testing to determine food processing quality. However, it does not provide real-time visibility and fails to identify some quality issues. To this end, startups are developing the internet of things (IoT)-based analytics-driven solutions for monitoring and controlling fermentation processes.

Greek startup Oliveex provides an integrated IoT-based monitoring platform for the food and beverage processing industries. The solution combines monitoring, data analytics, and digital traceability through in-line sensors, thereby, optimizing quality control. In addition, the cloud-based solution uses wireless sensing devices to monitor fermented food. The system implements data analytics based on batch history, fermentation models, and food safety modules as well as immutable records of production conditions. In this way, Oliveex provides real-time monitoring and visual insights into food production while eliminating continuous sample testing for food processing.

ClairFruit provides Computer Vision-based Produce Monitoring

Presently, fresh fruit and vegetable monitoring, as well as food quality control methods, are labor-intensive. To standardize quality management in fresh produce, these methods are inefficient since the standard of inspection varies between buyers. Further, to standardize fresh produce quality, startups are developing artificial intelligence (AI)-based solutions for quality monitoring and assessment for fresh produce.

Israeli startup ClariFruit offers an AI-enabled solution to monitor and analyze fruit quality. The startup uses computer vision and machine learning (ML) algorithms to analyze the external attributes of fruits, including color, stem color, and their size. Further, their algorithms leverage big data libraries that contain photos and attributes of products with similar characteristics.  The user directs a smartphone camera towards a fruit or vegetable using ClariFruit’s app, which then generates quality check reports. As a result, the solution enables farmers to consistently monitor the quality of their produce.

Sea Warden offers Remote Aquaculture Monitoring

Even as seafood production through aquaculture gains traction, it causes stress on marine environments. Also, with a huge rise in the number of ponds for aquaculture farming, it is difficult for seafood farmers to monitor and track the environmental impact of these ponds. That is why startups are developing satellite-based observation platforms to monitor seafood production.

Sea Warden is a startup based in the US that provides remote monitoring technology for the farmed seafood industry. The startup promotes the sustainability of farmed seafood through global satellite observation and a mobile platform that enables farmers to share and trade data. In addition, their solution enables automatic detection of shrimp ponds and monitors it from production to its estimated harvesting time. The system also utilizes a cloud-penetrating technology to facilitate year-round monitoring.

HDSTech digitizes Food Temperature Monitoring

Food facilities require accurate record-keeping for internal quality audits and regulatory compliance, important during food inspections. However, manual record-keeping is error-prone and lacks substantial proof, leading to audit defaults. Therefore, to automate this process, startups offer digital solutions through sensor integrations, which further improves operational efficiency. For example, automated food monitoring improves quality control and reduces food wastage.

Australian startup HDSTech provides an automated food safety record system. The startup’s iMonitor solution automates digital data compilation as well as records fridge and freezer temperatures using sensors and a Bluetooth device. Further, it facilitates continuous recording of temperature data to meet food safety and temperature monitoring regulations.  This enables aged care facilities and hospital kitchens to efficiently manage food regulation compliance. The system also prompts corrective action when temperatures fluctuate beyond desired limits and immediately alerts food managers.
