Tevoren enables Effluent Treatment

The discharge of untreated effluent from industrial activities into rivers and seas negatively impacts water ecosystems. Subsequently, the contaminants enter the food chain of nearby dwellers through aquatic food or water. To prevent industrial effluent from contaminating water ecosystems, startups design and engineer treatment solutions such as bio towers, moving bed bioreactors, and membrane bioreactors.

Indian startup Tevoren offers membrane bioreactors for effluent treatment. The startup designs primary, secondary, and tertiary treatment solutions for sewage, industrial effluent, and zero liquid discharge. By providing water and wastewater engineering solutions, Tevoren both reduces the environmental impact from industrial processes and enables the reuse of water resources.

BLUE-tec specializes in Osmotic MBR (OMBR)

The increasing need for water recycling technologies spurs research and development (R&D) in the area of water treatment solutions. In particular, research institutions and commercial organizations explore the combination of reverse osmosis (RO), forward osmosis (FO), and MBR for water reuse applications. Startups and scaleups develop osmotic MBR systems to improve water quality and decrease the fouling tendency of conventional MBRs.

Dutch scaleup BLUE-tec specializes in OMBR systems design. The scaleup’s OMBR technology finds applications in treating wastewater from industrial, waste processing, and domestic streams. Additionally, the technology is applicable to waste processing aboard ships and offshore locations. BLUE-tec also works on traditional MBR, pressure-driven membrane, and membrane contact processes for wastewater treatment.

Moleaer enhances MBR with a Nanobubble Generator

Compared to their size, MBR systems provide high wastewater treatment efficiency. However, the processing of substances such as mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) requires high oxygenation capacities, which is hard to achieve in shallow reservoirs. As a result, startups develop nanobubble generation systems that increase dissolved oxygen levels.

US-based startup Moleaer develops a nanobubble generator that enhances the aeration properties of MBR. The startup’s nanobubble technology tackles the oxygen shortfall that reduces MBR efficiency when processing MLSS substances. In addition to the brewing industry, the startup offers its nanotechnology to businesses in agriculture, oil & gas (O&G), and mining.

Cembrane manufactures Silicon Carbide Membranes

The membrane material in an MBR determines the mechanical qualities of the system. In particular, silicon carbide (SiC) membranes display high strength, resistance to abrasions, and high surface porosity. Consequently, startups and scaleups are replacing conventional polymeric membranes with SiC membranes to enhance the efficiency and durability of membrane reactors.

Danish scaleup Cembrane develops SiC membranes for MBR systems. The hydrophilic surface and high porosity of the scaleup’s membranes significantly increase their flux rates. Additionally, the membranes’ chemical resistance makes them efficient in extreme environments and resistant to pH variations.

Blue Foot Membranes develops Backwashable Membranes

Membrane bioreactors offer a number of advantages over conventional activated sludge wastewater cleanings, such as longer solid retention times (SRT) and high-quality effluent. However, membrane fouling is one of the major obstacles to wide applications of MBR. To increase membrane fouling control, startups develop membranes that are susceptible to backwash cleaning.

Belgian startup Blue Foot Membranes develops back washable membranes for MBRs. The startup’s Integrated Permeate Channel (IPC) technology enables the manufacture of membranes with high resistance to braiding and clogging. This increases the lifespan of a membrane and improves membrane fouling control.
