Cowlar develops Non-Invasive Smart Collars

Management of cows and calves is the key activity in the dairy industry. Care and management include monitoring of feeding behavior, milk production, and general health. Conventional methods of identification include ear tagging, tattooing, or even painting and manual monitoring of parameters. However, in large dairy farms, it becomes difficult to maintain cattle and monitor milking without employing more manpower and time. However, with the advent of digitalization and sensor technology, agritech startups develop innovative remote monitoring solutions.

US-based startup Cowlar develops non-invasive smart collars for cows. The startup’s collar monitors cow behavior in real-time. It detects body temperatures, activity patterns, and health parameters of cows. Cowler’s Cow Router is solar-powered and connects collars within a 2-mile range. The collars enable monitoring cattle activities like eating, sleeping, and ruminating, which are crucial to detect and prevent diseases. For example, changes in heat cycles provide insights into potential milk yield. The startup additionally uses machine learning (ML) algorithms to obtain actionable recommendations.

dropnostix offers Cow Health Monitoring Systems

Cow health monitoring is essential for the day-to-day operation of dairy farms. This ensures early detection and prevention of any potential health hazards or illnesses. This is why startups develop accurate and remote detection of these parameters using sensor technologies. For example, emerging dairy startups are designing and fabricating biosensors to monitor cattle health.

German startup dropnostix designs and manufactures biosensors for the early detection of diseases in cows. The startup’s sensors monitor different parameters for the individual health monitoring of cows. Some parameters include information about cow positions, such as standing or lying down, behavior, calving, and fertility. dropnostix’s sensors monitor rumen health and also analyze water drinking patterns. The startup’s patented solution reports early abnormalities by detecting movements and digestive activities.

Halter provides a Virtual Fence for Livestock

Traditionally, herds of cattle are fenced in barbed, woven, or plain wires to prevent stock crossing during grazing. This type of fencing is more of a physical barrier and some dairy farms even use electric fences. However, these physical fences are susceptible to theft and injury to animals due to wiring. Thus, digital fencing solutions ensure automatic herd management and establish control of the grazing boundaries by signaling cattle remotely.

New Zealand-based startup Halter offers solar-powered smart collars for cows. Halter’s collars provide heat detection and pasture management as well as herd movement automation. The startup develops Cowgorithm, a set of algorithms to translate human intentions to signals that cows understand, and vice versa. These algorithms utilize the audio and sensory cues of cows and send vibration signals to virtually “fence” and facilitate cows to move in the right path. The solution also alerts farmers in case of an anomaly.

e-stado creates Biosensors to Monitor Cows

The process of calving requires a clean, dry, and protected environment. Moreover, calving cows need to be separated from the herd to prevent calf diseases. At the same time, inefficient management of calving causes pain and other difficulties for the animals. Moreover, conventionally, calving is detected manually and it poses risks of mishandling. That is why startups develop real-time markers and monitoring tools to improve calving processes, for both humans and animals.

Polish startup e-stado provides ear, tail, and environment biosensors for cows. The E-stado system consists of biosensors and radio transmitters to monitor dairy cow herds using their proprietary dashboard. The ear biosensors detect heat, feed intake, and inactivity time. Tail biosensors provide insights on calving and also detect calving retention time. The radio transmitters collect data from sensors to process and compile the data in a server. Together, the startup’s biosensor solution allows dairy farmers to isolate and care for calving cows at an early stage.

LITUUS creates Estrus Detection in Cows

Currently, the dairy industry uses artificial insemination to impregnate cows. This process facilitates improvements in the quality of livestock and the introduction of cattle with new traits. Moreover, monitoring and detection of estrus levels in cattle are important to plan for the breeding cycle. Estrus monitoring is typically done by visual observations, as well as heat detection and tail markers for cows. Startups are working on smart monitor devices to digitally track and analyze the breeding behavior of cattle.

French startup LITUUS provides smart collars for herds. The startup’s patented solution monitors the reproductive cycle of cows. The collars detect and analyze the estrus cycle using the startup’s patented algorithms. The collar also automatically monitors cow behavior, the shed environment, and pastures for livestock. The device further detects health, stress, and feed data to create personalized profiles for every cow. As a result, the solution streamlines reproduction cycles for dairy cows and farmers.
