NYX Technologies makes a Sleep Enhancement Headband

Many people experience disrupted sleep, which leads to further health complications and increased susceptibility to chronic diseases like diabetes. The causes of disruptions may vary from person to person but are often linked to abnormal brain wave patterns during different stages of sleep. Startups are utilizing advances in neuroscience to replicate healthy brain wave patterns through wearable electroencephalogram (EEG) devices that stimulate deep sleep.

Israeli startup NYX Technologies provides a headband for sleep enhancement. The wearable device has undetectable sensors that identify and record the wearer’s brain wave pattern. It uses electrodes to stimulate sleep by helping the brain achieve the natural pattern necessary for falling asleep or entering deep sleep. Additionally, the accompanying mobile app sets the individualized sleep program, using the data from the sensors and artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms. The user gets a summary of their sleep, as well as recommendations for optimal sleep.

Somnology develops a Sleep Monitoring Device

Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder that leads to short-term risks such as accidents, low performance, headaches, and mood disorders. Moreover, its long-term health risks include heart disease, stroke, dementia, and cancer. As sleep apnea involves interruptions in a patient’s breathing when they are asleep, tracking the oxygen saturation during sleep is critical. Therefore, healthcare startups are offering digital therapeutics that track oxygen saturation and other factors for improved diagnosis and treatment of apnea.

Somnology is a US-based startup that manufactures SomnoRing, a sleep monitoring device. It is a medical-grade device that includes motion, pulse oximeter, and heart rate sensors. It tracks oxygen saturation and desaturation index overnight when the user is asleep. The user then gets all the device data and sleep reports on the Somnology app connected to the ring. Additionally, the startup’s sleep lab as a service platform provides detailed reports, diagnoses, and allows users to schedule telehealth meetings with sleep specialists.

Smart Nora offers a Non-invasive Anti-Snoring Solution

Snoring is a common problem that not only affects the individual but also the other people sleeping with them. Most anti-snoring solutions in the market, such as mouthguards, strips, or straps, are often uncomfortable for the wearer. To tackle this issue, health tech startups are developing non-invasive anti-snoring devices. These devices gently move the snorer’s head on detecting snoring sounds, thus restoring normal breathing and stopping the snoring.

Canadian startup Smart Nora offers a non-invasive anti-snoring solution. The product consists of three parts — the Pebble device that detects snoring, a padded pillow insert, and a silent pump that inflates and deflates the padded insert. It moves the pillow on detecting early sounds of snoring. The movement stimulates the throat muscles, allowing for natural breathing to resume and improving the sleep quality.

Nukute enables Home Sleep Apnea Testing

Almost a billion people around the world suffer from sleep apnea. However, in most cases, it remains undiagnosed. This is mainly because the majority of clinics lack sleep specialists. To resolve this issue, healthcare startups providing wearable sensors that collect biosignals for home sleep apnea testing (HSAT). Additionally, wearables also enable remote diagnostics for telemedicine.

Nukute is a Finnish startup that offers a screening and diagnostics solution for HAST. The startup’s solution includes a neckband with two wireless sensors, a tablet computer, and a cloud application. The sensors record biosignals such as breathing, blood oxygen saturation, heart rate, and sleeping position. It then analyzes these data using machine learning algorithms. The startup’s product also sends the results to physicians to confirm the diagnosis.

ProSomnus provides Dental Sleep Apnea Devices

While there are various types of sleep apnea, the most common is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). It involves sporadic relaxation of throat muscles, which blocks the airway during sleep. While continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy devices are considered effective for OSA therapy, many people find sleeping with a mask uncomfortable. To address this problem, startups are manufacturing more comfortable and portable oral sleep devices.

US-based startup ProSomnus makes dental sleep apnea devices. ProSomnus [IA] is one of the products customizable for each patient’s treatment plan. The customization includes modifying anterior discluders, airway openings, splint coverage, and dual post angles, among other parameters. The devices feature compliance sensors, DentiTrac, that measure the time-worn of the oral appliance while the patient sleeps to aid the doctors in prescribing an effective treatment plan for the patients.
