RePurpose Energy leverages Machine Learning (ML) to repurpose used Batteries

Governments across the world are embracing the concepts of circular economy as climate change and environmental degradation is rampant across industries. For example, the toxic chemicals in battery packs seep out over time, if not discarded properly, thereby harming the environment. Reducing the number of new raw materials and increasing the use of recycled materials enables the reduction of emissions and improves waste management efforts. To this end, startups develop machine learning algorithms to analyze the health of battery packs and assist in their repurposing.

The US-based startup RePurpose Energy leverages ML to repurpose used battery packs into modular second-life battery packs. The startup uses a proprietary diagnostic system to assess the health state of batteries and assign them a proper destination. Moreover, the startup’s Battery Management System (BMS) is designed to maximize the utility of partially degraded cells.

Synchor Recycling repurposes Asphalt

Environmental benefits of recycling asphalt include reduced dependency on oil for the manufacture of new asphalt, reduced construction material cost, and less landfill space needed. Recycled and repurposed asphalt combines other mineral fillers that provide extra stiffness and decrease the possibility of cracking and rutting. That is why startups develop novel material solutions by repurposing asphalt.

Canadian startup Synchor Recycling develops RaZphalt, a proprietary product that is repurposed from recycled asphalt, wood, and shingles. When combining recycled asphalt and recycled shingles, the resultant hybrid product exhibits improved characteristics in comparison to regular asphalt. Further, RaZphalt can be transported, applied, or rolled in the same manner as traditional asphalt.

Spiers New Technologies remanufactures Vehicle Battery Packs

Recently, we witness an increase in the use of electric vehicles (EVs) owing to the adverse impact of burning fossil fuels. Though EVs are gaining popularity, their batteries are still a cause for concern. Repurposing, however, reduces the need for additional power production, extends resources, and shrinks landfill waste. Moreover, the battery packs in EVs still have enough power in them to provide energy as stationary power sources even after being removed from the vehicles. Startups create AI-powered solutions to ascertain the health of discarded EV battery packs and facilitate their repurposing.

The US-based startup Spiers New Technologies repairs, remanufactured, and repurposes advanced battery packs from hybrid and electric vehicles. With the help of proprietary battery grading algorithms, the startup aids its customers to better manage their battery pack inventory and maximize its value. The startup also offers end-to-end post-production logistics for used battery packs including monitored, climate-controlled storage, dealer network management, and end-of-life recycling preparation.

ByFusion repurposes Plastic Waste into Building Material

Conventional construction and building materials contribute to a significant amount of carbon emissions each year. One avenue to reduce the carbon emissions attributed to concrete structures is the use of sustainable materials such as repurposed plastic waste. To this end, startups and scaleups develop repurposed plastic waste solutions for the construction industry.

New Zealand-based startup ByFusion repurposes plastic waste into building material. The startup’s flagship product, ByBlock, is created by superheating shredded plastic waste. The product finds applications in walls, sheds, privacy fencing, terracing, and landscaping. And unlike concrete blocks, ByBlock does not crumble or crack but significantly reduces carbon emissions while also being customizable to the customer’s requirements.

Circular Computing manufactures Carbon-Neutral Laptops

Every year, the continuous manufacturing of subsequent models of electronic products makes consumers discard a significant amount of electronic waste, or e-waste, globally. This causes serious environmental concern in terms of overflowing landfills. To tackle this situation, startups and scaleups recycle, refurbish and remanufacture e-waste into viable second life electronics.

British startup Circular Computing manufactures carbon-neutral laptops. The startup’s manufacturing process includes full or partial dismantling of an old laptop to the component level and ensures performance to the latest standards. The startup is ISO14001 accredited from an operational standpoint that requires an effective environmental management system (EMS).
