FathomX enables Cancer Screening

Effective cancer screening is essential to detect cancer early and improve patient outcomes. However, imaging-based cancer screening solutions often suffer from high rates of false positives and false negatives. This is why MedTech startups use artificial intelligence (AI) to scan and analyze medical images. AI-based cancer screening solutions improve the sensitivity of cancer screening, as well as reduce costs.

Singaporean startup FathomX develops a cancer screening solution. FxMammo, the startup’s women’s health product, analyzes mammography images and records to estimate the risk of cancer. It uses an AI engine to reduce false-positive rates and speed up the analysis. It also generates lesion heat maps and automatic reports, simplifying follow-up action for clinicians.

Medivis develops Holographic Surgery Tech

Many surgeries are highly complex and require lengthy operating and training times. Advances in immersive technologies, such as augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR), are reinventing surgery by lowering complexity. For example, AR allows surgeons to visualize anatomical structures like vessels, nerves, and tissues. This improves the surgeons’ workflow by increasing the safety and speed of surgeries.

Medivis is a US-based startup that builds a holographic surgery solution. The startup’s SurgicalAR solution combines AR and AI to allow surgeons to overlay images onto the patients. By providing better preoperative guidelines, it improves surgical outcomes while saving costs. Medivis also offers AnatomyX, an AR-based lab and learning platform for anatomy students.

Usono builds a Dynamic Ultrasound Device

Ultrasound imaging finds applications in diagnostics, pregnancy, biopsies, and even in the treatment of soft-tissue injuries. However, their use in dynamic situations such as functional movements has been limited. To address this, MedTech startups are innovating with dynamic ultrasound devices and accessories. These solutions enable assessing tissues in movement and find use in rehabilitation and sports tech.

Usono is a Dutch startup that offers a dynamic muscle ultrasound imaging device. ProbeFix Dynamic, the startup’s product, maintains an ultrasound probe in place during dynamic exercise. This facilitates the use of ultrasound systems during movement, with applications in muscle recovery, general rehabilitation, and intensive care. Moreover, it builds an ultrasound accessory tool with use cases in cardiac monitoring and diagnostic procedures.

Phoenix Orthosis offers a Hand Orthosis

Paralysis following injuries, multiple sclerosis, or cerebral palsy limits the movement of body parts. Orthoses address this limitation by providing external support to the musculoskeletal system. This is why MedTech startups build orthoses for the lower limb, upper limb, spine, and head. In addition to enabling movement, orthoses often facilitate recovery or provide relief as well.

Hungarian startup Phoenix Orthosis makes an antispastic hand orthosis. The orthosis enables functional movement of fingers for patients with spastic hand paralysis. Designed for all-day wear, it is easy to wear and discreet, as well as features wireless charging. The startup’s solution facilitates the rehabilitation of patients by speeding up recovery.

Cerenion advances Brain Monitoring

In intensive care, physicians monitor vitals such as heart rate, blood oxygen levels, and brain activity. However, in cases of hypoxic, ischemic, or traumatic injuries, there is a lack of reliable assessment methods for brain activity. To bridge this gap, MedTech startups are developing novel brain monitoring technologies. Using AI and advanced analytics, such solutions enable accurate assessment of brain activity for diagnostic and therapeutic use cases.

Finnish MedTech startup Cerenion provides brain monitoring solutions. The startup’s C-Trend software uses AI to convert complex electroencephalogram (EEG) data into a simple score. This score is a proxy for the EEG slow-wave activity, a neurophysiological feature of healthy brain function. It enables brain monitoring for intensive care of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, status epilepticus, and delayed cerebral ischemia.
