TOM Medications offers a Smartphone Application

With increasing focus on healthy living, people consume both medication and health supplements to lead healthier lives. However, remembering to take all the pills that the doctors prescribe at the correct time is tedious. This is where smartphone applications come in to assist patients and consumers with medication management. Apps ensure effective adherence of doses by simple alerts and notifications. To this end, startups develop cloud-based applications that make medication adherence easier for all stakeholders including pharmacists, doctors, and patients.

Swiss startup TOM Medications develops the smartphone application TOM to manage the medication adherence of patients. TOM gives the patient timely notifications of all the medication that is required to be taken; 30 minutes before a meal, for example. Moreover, the app behaves like a virtual pill dispenser for patients to be aware of what medication to take at any time of the day.

Dose Health provides a Portable Smart Pillbox

Patients who have chronic conditions such as arthritis, high blood pressure, or diabetes require to take medication multiple times during the day. However, existing pill organizers are bulky and do not add any functional value to the entire process of taking medication. Portability is one aspect where startups add value to the process of medication adherence.

The US-based startup Dose Health provides a portable smart pillbox for patients who require medication multiple times a day. The device is securable with a safety screw and key and transmits notifications regarding adherence to users, family members, or even caregivers. Moreover, the on-screen display assists the refilling of the pillbox at the end of each day and has an assistive flip capability for patients who are physically challenged to flip the pillbox. The cellular connection enables users to analyze the history of medication adherence including correct dosage and frequency.

Stithi offers an Automatic Pill Dispenser

Senior patients sometimes have trouble remembering when to take specific medications. Technological assistance in the form of automatic pill dispensers with notifications and alarms enable these patients to manage their medication effectively. For example, patients get visual assistance in the form of flashing lights as well as audible reminders. Startups develop automatic pill dispensers with smart displays and additional attachments to enable all patients, including the physically challenged, to effectively manage their medication.

Indian startup Stithi offers an automatic pill dispenser for senior patients. The startup’s dispensers are three sizes ranging from 5 pills to 15 pills a day. The device comes with self-build architecture for networking and works even in remote areas with a poor internet connection. The startup’s product also has the capability of storing 1 to 4 weeks’ worth of medication depending on the patient’s frequency of intake. Further, the patient’s doctors also receive notifications and alerts on their patient’s medication adherence to increase adherence but restrict abuse.

Remedee Labs develops Electronic Medication for Pain Management

Pain medication is highly susceptible to overuse as the body gets acclimated to the dosage over a period of time. And while people can still take medication for pain, there are solutions that alleviate pain without the need for pills. For example, electronic stimulation releases endorphins in the body with the assistance of microchips and is a novel idea to eliminate the use of medication for effective pain management.

French startup Remedee Labs develops an endorphin-stimulation solution to enable medication-less pain management. The startup’s patented product is a Microelectronic Endorphin Trigger (MEET) based on silicon. The MEET module leverages specific high-frequency wavelengths that penetrate superficial skin layers (less than 0.5 mm), targeting the body’s sensitive cutaneous receptors to stimulate endorphins. The startup’s product is also integrable into small form factors including wearable devices, which enable fast and simple pain relief.

SmartMed delivers Cloud Solutions for Medication Management

Existing manual processes in the hospital pharmacy supply chain make it difficult to achieve operational excellence. Critical inventory management is essential for reducing stockouts and overordering. Electronic health records (EHRs) are one way to standardize the medical information available to healthcare stakeholders including the patients. Cloud solutions integrate EHRs into the enterprise software and enable pharmacies to automatically trigger orders of inventory based on medication requirements.

Portugal-based startup SmartMed delivers cloud solutions for medication management. The startup offers products for patients as well as for hospitals and pharmacies. The SmartMed app is an end-to-end solution for the entire process of prescribing, monitoring, logistics, and administration of medication by doctors, pharmacists, and nurses. Moreover, this solution enables smarter stock management and reduces return flows in hospital pharmacies.
