KroniKare offers Artificial Intelligence-based Chronic Wound Assessment

Globally, wound care and management consumes considerable time and resources for medical professionals. Especially when dealing with chronic wounds, the lack of comprehensive assessment and diagnostic tools causes preventable and prolonged pain and anxiety among patients. Emerging HealthTech startups turn to advances in artificial intelligence (AI) tools to help healthcare institutions automate wound assessment and save valuable resources.

KroniKare is a Singaporean startup offering the KroniKare Wound Scanner, an HSA Class-B registered diagnostic tool. The patented, non-invasive, and handheld scanner uses a clinically-validated AI that analyzes thousands of wound reports. KroniKare Wound Scanner uses multi-spectral scanning to generate reports with a detailed assessment of a chronic wound in just 30 seconds. This helps healthcare practitioners quickly and accurately treat a patient’s wound.

Piomic develops Combined Optical and Magnetic Stimulation for Wound Care

People living with diabetes require close monitoring and care when they are wounded since it takes much longer for their wounds to heal. This adds to the complexities of managing wounds for healthcare institutions as well as home-based care. MedTech startups take advantage of large volumes of wound care information to develop solutions to speed up wound healing. By combining multi-disciplinary research & development (R&D), emerging medical device companies build novel tools for wound healing, such as optical and magnetic stimulation-based wound care.

Swiss medical device startup Piomic is developing the Combined Optical & Magnetic Stimulation (COMS) One Therapy System. The non-invasive and lightweight medical device incorporates a platform technology, making it suitable for replication for various pathological conditions. Optical and magnetic stimulation target the initial inflammatory phases of chronic wound progression to speed up the next phase of tissue repair. The COMS System comprises the COMS Therapy Unit, a sterile wound adapter – COMStouch, and a flexible fixation band – COMSfix to produce a durable closure for hard-to-heal wounds.

Untech creates a Chronic Wound Healing Gel

A majority of chronic wounds are infected with biofilm-forming bacteria, making them resistant to antiseptics and antibiotics. Sometimes, this worsens to a state where the affected body part needs to be amputated. Emerging BioTech startups work on broad-spectrum biofilm elimination solutions. However, such solutions are rarely successful, especially for chronic wounds, such as diabetic foot and pressure or venous ulcers. The ability to completely close chronic wounds has significant implications for healthcare institutions as well as patients.

Based out of the US, Untech is a drug development startup that creates a gel that aims to permanently heal chronic wounds. The startup utilizes cross-industry advancements in biotechnology and pharmaceuticals to create an anti-pathogenic, anesthetic, and pro-healing gel. The gel’s formula combines molecules and enzymes that heal chronic wounds and is currently undergoing preclinical testing. Untech’s initial therapeutic target focuses on refractory chronic wound healing reassembly.

Fibroheal Woundcare specializes in Silk Protein-based Wound Healing

Traditional wound care materials are usually made from synthetic or natural cotton wool. While they do the job, patients tend to experience some discomfort when fibers stick to the wound or if the cotton wool is contaminated. BioTech startups utilize the rapid advancements in new biomaterials, useful for various microfluidics and bioprinting applications, to improve wound care as well. Biomaterials offer greater resistance and flexibility while being non-toxic and biodegradable.

Fibroheal Woundcare is an Indian startup specializing in silk proteins as biomaterials for creating active wound management products. The startup’s patented silk bio-engineered products address the unmet needs and challenges of wound care management. Fibroheal develops active wound dressing solutions as well as ointments and gels for tissue regeneration and to support cellular functions for faster wound closure. One of their products, D-Fibroheal Ag Foam is a sterile, soft, conformable, and bi-layered silver-impregnated polyurethane foam dressing for heavily exudating, hard-to-heal, and stalled or cavity wounds.

RenovoDerm enables In-Situ Tissue Regeneration

Even when wound care is immediately tended to, the wound healing process is slow and causes considerable discomfort to those injured. From surgical scars, injury during physical activities, and traumatic injuries to chronic wounds, HealthTech startups are working on novel ways to speed recovery and eliminate recurring hospitalization. Such innovations draw from advances in materials engineering, including biomimetics, microfluidics, and biotechnology, as well as natural healing processes of the human body. For example, 3D scaffolds allow cells to rapidly adhere, migrate, proliferate, and differentiate in a manner consistent with the body’s natural healing process.

US-based startup RenovoDerm enables in-situ tissue regeneration using its Phoenix Wound Matrix, created using Nanofiber Solutions’ 3D scaffolds platform technology. The fully-bioresorbable, fibrous, and 3D electrospun device composed of synthetic polymers provides a temporary microenvironment that supports endogenous wound healing. In this way, the solution promotes healthy tissue growth rather than a protracted inflammatory response.
