AtriAN Medical designs Non-thermal Ablation Technology

Cardiac ablation is a clinical procedure for the treatment of cardiac arrhythmia by blocking faulty electrical pathways. Generally, ablation techniques use the heat generated by radiofrequency (RF), energy, or a laser to cause tissue lesions. This, however, affects other myocardial tissues in the proximity of the target cells. This is why HealthTech startups are innovating in non-thermal, permanent effect technologies that mark precise scars in the target region.

Irish startup AtriAN Medical develops medical devices targeting the origin of atrial fibrillation. The startup’s solution uses micro pulsed electric fields (mPEF) to ablate cells in the specific target region, leaving other myocardial tissue layers unaffected. Unlike other ablation technologies, it is a non-thermal solution. The startup’s technology targets neuronal cells in the ganglionated plexi (GP), leading to a permanent effect in limiting the resurgence of abnormal heart rhythm.

Ablacon develops Electrographic Flow Mapping

Electrographic flow (EGF) technology enables the mapping of drivers of atrial fibrillation. The technique measures cardiac electrical potential and performs subsequent flow analysis. An EGF mapping software aids surgeons in ablation therapy. This enables effective treatment of persistent atrial fibrillation.

Ablacon designs an electrographic flow mapping for atrial fibrillation treatment. The startup’s Ablamap technique creates a spatiotemporal visualization of cardiac action potential flow. It properly visualizes the chaotic conduction of atrial fibrillation, leading to a better understanding of the initiation and maintenance of the condition.

Rhythm AI builds an AI-driven Mapping System

AI-based tools aid in the proper planning of ablation therapy, improving the accuracy of ablation in the target sites. 3D modeling of atria and other regions affected by atrial fibrillation helps physicians to collect data from related procedures such as catheter and surgical ablations among others. Accurate ablations reduce the chances of repeat procedures as well as limit the side effects of puncturing non-target tissues.

British startup Rhythm AI builds STAR Mapping, an AI-based solution for catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation. The startup’s solution uses proprietary AI algorithms to identify the regions in the heart to target for cardioversion, surgical ablation, and catheter ablation techniques. It replicates the logical deductive process applied to electrical signals to locate the areas within the heart responsible for heart rhythm disorder.

Donisi Health provides Bioindicator Detection System

Cardiac disorders are chronic in nature and often originate with little or no symptoms which is why it is often only diagnosed at a later stage. This is why MedTech startups develop solutions for the early detection of bioindicators and diagnosis of cardiac disorders. This helps physicians plan an active response and better plan prognosis. Startups and companies are working on passive biosensing solutions for the diagnosis and risk prediction of cardiac disorders, including atrial fibrillation.

Israeli startup Donisi Health provides a contact-free device for cardiac and pulmonary assessment. Donisi remotely detects signs of pulmonary congestion and additional physiological parameters or bioindicators that are key for the detection of heart failure exacerbation. The device’s nano-vibration motion-detection technology utilizes AI-based clinical algorithms to simultaneously detect signs, analyze and provide personalized health analytics through their proprietary app.

Cortify develops a Combination Medical Device

Early stages of diagnosis with electrocardiogram (ECG) devices often miss signs of atrial fibrillation. Combination devices, on the other hand, detect early signs. These solutions integrate image processing software with noninvasive ECG devices to enable effective diagnosis, risk prediction, and treatment planning.

Cortify is a German startup developing a combination medical device. Acorys, the startup’s platform, combines ECG electrodes, a biopotential amplifier, and an image processing platform. This enables non-invasive and highly precise mapping of cardiac arrhythmia. The solution also aids in the stratification of atrial fibrillation patients and provides insights into the efficiency of an ablation procedure.
