Vesper Medical enables Deep Venous Stenting

Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is a medical condition that blocks the veins. Deep venous stenting is a first-line treatment that seeks to eliminate the venous obstruction that causes the blocks. However, high resistance prevents the efficient delivery of stents into many veins. To address this, MedTech startups are improving the stability and flexibility of venous stents.

US-based startup Vesper Medical offers solutions for deep venous stenting. The startup’s DUO Venous Stent System portfolio includes stents that restore venous flow. The stents are customizable to therapy and relieve the painful symptoms of diseases such as CVI. They combine cranial strength and caudal flexibility to allow doctors access to veins ranging from the inferior vena cava (IVC) to the common femoral vein.

EndoGI Medical delivers Non-Vascular Stenting

While the majority of the stents are for cardiovascular conditions, physicians deploy stents for a range of other applications, such as esophageal, colonic, and tracheal conditions. Depending on the type, they range in size from micrometers to a few centimeters. This creates challenges in the effective delivery and placement of stents to the target site. That is why startups are working on placement solutions for non-vascular stents.

EndoGI Medical is an Israeli startup developing a pre-mounted, multiple stent placement system. With the EndoGI Multiple Stents System, physicians are able to insert and place two plastic stents in the common bile duct and in the ureter. This secures and maintains access to the guidewire at the targeted anatomical site, enabling efficient treatment of biliary, pancreatic, and ureteric strictures. The startup also offers a system for single biliary or ureteral stents.

Thoracent offers Esophageal Stents

Many health conditions block a portion of the esophagus, making it difficult for the patients to swallow. By unlocking the esophagus, esophageal stents allow for food and liquids to pass. However, due to anatomical variations, these stents do not work optimally with all patients. This is why MedTech startups are developing stents that adapt and conform to each patient’s anatomy.

US-based startup Thoracent develops medical devices for pulmonology. The startup’s product, BONASTENT, is a self-expandable metallic esophageal stent. It features a nitinol hook and cross-wire structure that makes it adaptable to the patient’s anatomy. Moreover, its radial and returning force are optimal for high conformability. The startup also provides tracheobronchial stents and other endoscopy devices.

HydruMedical develops Ureteral Stents

Urologists use stents to help patients with blocked kidneys pass urine to the bladder. This also requires an in-office procedure to remove the stents. While in the patient’s ureters, stents cause slight discomfort and, in some cases, doctors forget to take them out. To mitigate these issues, MedTech startups are creating stents with bio-based materials that dissolve over time.

HydruMedical is a Portuguese startup providing urological medical devices. HydruStent, the startup’s product, is a 100% biodegradable hydrogel ureteral stent. The natural polymer-based stent degrades homogeneously, eliminating the need for a clinical procedure for stent removal. This allows urologists to efficiently let urine drain from kidney to bladder in post-operative conditions.

Oxford Heartbeat advances Stent Surgery Planning

For vascular conditions, it is a routine procedure for surgeons to insert stents in blood vessels. Due to the delicate anatomy of the vessels, the procedure is not free from risk and often leads to blood clots or vessel rupture. This makes it crucial for surgeons to place stents at precise locations where they unblock the vessels without damaging them. Startups offer software solutions that improve patient outcomes in stenting procedures.

British startup Oxford Heartbeat builds a planning tool for surgeries involving stents. The startup’s PreSize Neurovascular software predicts the behavior of a stent in an individual patient’s anatomy by creating a 3D model of the patient’s vessels from medical images. This helps surgeons pick the right stents for surgery as well as determine where exactly to place them.
