WTEnergy facilitates Waste-to-Synthesis Gas Conversion

Founding Year: 2017
Location: Barcelona, Spain
Partner for: Power Generation, Biofuels

Spanish startup WTEnergy develops a proprietary thermochemical conversion technology to generate energy from waste feedstocks. The startup uses input materials such as industrial waste, meat and bone meal, poultry litter, biomass, and agricultural waste and reduces them to generate synthetic gas. This reduction process is done through a bubbling fluidized bed gasifier, where fuel and fluidizing agents react under auto-thermal reduction conditions. The resulting gas is then treated by a reforming process to remove all contaminants present in the residue. One of the main challenges to syngas is the high cost of technology and the difficulty of large-scale production. WT Energy’s systems overcome these challenges and allow the energy industry to economically produce large quantities of clean syngas for a range of applications.

Ark Noah Energy generates Hydrogen from Synthesis Gas

Founding Year: 2020
Location: Wehrheim, Germany
Partner for: Hydrogen Generation

German startup Ark Noah Energy produces hydrogen from syngas using renewable raw materials. The startup’s production system heats fuel to up 550-degrees Celsius, with the exclusion of oxygen, using the exhaust gases from gas engines. The resulting coal and the pyrolysis gas go through two physically separate paths – unlike existing solutions. The gas goes into oxidation while the coal goes directly into a reduction process. Hydrogen is then extracted from the wood synthesis gas by means of pressure swing adsorption. This enables the energy industry to combine and scale syngas and hydrogen production systems.

Green Independence manufactures Syngas Production Devices

Founding Year: 2020
Location: Brindisi, Italy
Partner for: Energy Storage, Green Hydrogen

Green Independence is an Italian startup that develops a stand-alone device to store energy generated from renewable sources such as solar. The startup’s New Artificial Leaf (NAL) technology enables off-grid, decentralized-direct production of green hydrogen and syngas, without passing through buffers like batteries or electrolyzers. The startup’s device, ArtificialLeaf, efficiently converts solar energy by directly transforming water into green hydrogen products. It also recycles and converts industrial waste products such as carbon dioxide (CO2) into solar fuels, syngas, or other valuable products. Green Independence thereby enables traditional industries to transition to zero-emission solutions and provides benefits for the CO2, energy storage, and syngas markets.

KEW Technology produces Hydrogen-Rich Syngas

Founding Year: 2016
Location: Birmingham, UK
Partner for: Power Generation, Fuel Production

UK-based startup KEW Technology specializes in converting non-recyclable resources and low-grade biomass into sustainable energy. The startup uses advanced thermal conversion (ATC) to produce high-quality hydrogen-rich syngas derived from end-of-life waste fuel sources. KEW Technology’s production process also uses the application of pressurized fluidized bed technology with high-temperature treatment for green energy production. In this way, the startup solves challenges in waste management and provides clean fuels for various applications. Additionally, the modular technology allows waste centers to easily scale their operations to accept waste materials from a greater number of sources.

Phoenix Biopower creates Syngas from Biomass

Founding Year: 2016
Location: Stockholm, Sweden
Partner for: Biomass-to-Electricity Conversion

Phoenix Biopower is a Swedish startup that develops a scalable and cost-effective technology to efficiently generate electricity from biomass. The startup’s solution combines high-pressure steam treatment and gasification of biomass, a gas turbine for power generation, and optimized heat integration. The system then merges syngas and steam flow, which is then led to a gas turbine for combustion and energy generation. This provides energy grid operators with a reliable source of green energy to complement wind and solar energy intermittence. In addition, the startup’s solution converts biowaste from agricultural activities into electricity more efficiently than conventional waste-to-energy plants.
