FOX-TECH builds Ultra-Low Temperature Freezers

With the commencement of COVID-19 vaccine distribution worldwide, cold chain management is emerging as a crucial factor for vaccine safety and quality. Efficient cold chain management entails maintaining constant temperatures to keep vaccines viable as well as having suitable technologies in place to allow stakeholders in vaccine storage, transport, and distribution chains to verify temperature stability. Hence, startups develop internet of things (IoT)-based solutions for vaccine storage to monitor the temperature across the supply chain.

Taiwan-based startup FOX-TECH offers Pelican, an IoT-connected ultra-low temperature freezer to transport vaccines. Pelican not only establishes an extremely cold environment of -80 degrees, but also sustains that temperature for up to 24 hours after any power outage, without the use of dry ice or other materials. Further, the startup provides Temphawk, which combines high-end sensor systems and cloud-based artificial intelligence (AI), for users to monitor the temperature of perishable goods wirelessly.

Simple Hardware’s develops Temperature Dataloggers

Dairy products require close monitoring throughout the cold chain due to the health risks of spoiled dairy products. There are numerous reports of dairy supply chain contamination, ranging from listeria in ice cream to salmonella in milk. When dairy products aren’t kept cool continuously, it allows bacteria to grow and may even become fatal. Startups acknowledge this issue and develop advanced hardware devices to monitor the quality of dairy products.

Simple Hardware is a Czech startup that makes temperature detector devices. Unlike the traditional data loggers that record the temperature at predefined intervals, Sigfox sensors report only in the case of change or fluctuation in temperature. This saves immensely on battery life, tariff, and data processing requirements. The data is also available to end-users through the Sigfox IoT platform. The device enables dairy companies to ensure that their cheese or other products are maintained at the required temperatures.

Groenlandia Tech provides a Smart Fridge

To maintain optimum viability and function, biological samples undergo a rigorous chain of custody before transportation. This is critical for all samples, but especially so for temperature-sensitive ones. Exacting logistics and inventory management must be included as part of an overall chain of custody, whether transferring a single collection of biosamples or a complete laboratory. This assures that samples reach unharmed and unaltered at their destination. Startups offer real-time tracking of the transportation conditions of the samples.

Spanish startup Groenlandia Tech develops traceability and temperature control solutions for health logistics. The startup’s Nuuk, a proprietary smart fridge, uses global positioning system (GPS) technology to track the journey of medical samples in real-time. The device’s data is accessible by means of radio frequency identification (RFID) cards. This allows the safe transport of biological samples, vaccines, drugs, and organs.

Therma produces Temperature Monitoring Sensors

The cold chain allows preserving and transporting perishable items in the right temperature range to slow down biological degradation and provide consumers with safe and high-quality foods. However, cold chain efficiency is often less than optimal. For example, frequent temperature abuses, above or below the recommended product-specific temperature range, lead to significant food waste and food safety risks. To avoid food spoilage, logistics companies use temperature sensors in their warehouses to continuously keep a check on the environmental conditions where the food is kept.

US-based startup Therma builds IoT-powered temperature monitoring and analytics solutions. The startup’s wireless sensors protect inventory round-the-clock from equipment failures, power outages, and human errors to prevent food, product, and energy wastage. It also sends alerts via email, SMS, or phone call when an issue arises and unlocks predictive equipment maintenance to eliminate costly last-minute repairs. Users also determine an ideal temperature threshold and receive alerts accordingly.

BluLine Solutions facilitates Cold Chain Monitoring

The driving factors contributing to the growth of the cold chain industry include changing consumer perceptions of diet, vaccine distribution, and a narrowing focus on the quality of food. For example, meat is a perishable product with a short shelf life and short selling times. Due to this, cold chain management in meat supply is of utmost importance to maintain the quality and safety of meat products.

BluLine Solutions is a US-based startup that offers wireless temperature data loggers for cold chain monitoring. The startup manufactures its near-field communication (NFC) or radio-frequency (RF) blulog temperature data loggers for monitoring and recording systems. blulog enables on-demand wireless temperature and humidity monitoring, as well as recording and reporting. It is available for reefer transport, cold storage, retail refrigeration, and refrigerated totes. In addition, the full data reports, along with time and temperature data storage, are accessible through the complementary, cloud-based BluConsole dashboard that is accessible to all stakeholders within the cold chain.
