Moment Energy develops Renewable Energy Storage Systems

Renewable energy has become increasingly popular as a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. However, leveraging them for effective demand response requires storing renewable energy. To increase the usability of renewable energy sources, startups develop energy storage systems. These technologies help in demand response and increase reliance on clean energy.

Canadian startup Moment Energy designs renewable energy storage systems. The startup’s energy storage technology is repurposing electric vehicle (EV) batteries to store renewable energy. This provides users with clean energy in a cost-effective manner. One of the startup’s projects deals with storing renewable energy at the Canadian Hydrokinetic Turbine Test Centre (CHTTC), a microgrid research facility. This deployment is providing researchers with a complete microgrid setup while showcasing the performance of second-life batteries. Other projects include entirely powering off-grid homes around Canada.

Zero NOx provides Gas-to-Power Solutions

Fossil fuel-powered vehicles emit greenhouse gases (GHG) and contribute to climate change. These vehicles are unsustainable and prompt automotive innovators to introduce alternative fuel sources. However, buying new electric vehicles (EVs) is significantly more expensive than buying petrol or diesel vehicles. To tackle this problem, startups develop gas-to-electric conversion systems.

US-based startup Zero NOx converts gas-based vehicles into EVs. Using custom engineering technologies, the startup assesses and designs replacements in the vehicle to completely change fuel systems. The process begins with determining and assessing the current vehicle design and then ordering different parts to create a drive train. Following this, the startup designs and tests the batteries according to vehicle specifications. Finally, Zero NOx manufactures and delivers batteries for final placement into upgraded vehicles.

NeedEnergy offers Energy-as-a-Service (EaaS)

Low-carbon technologies are limited by the low rate of adoption in the energy industry. Expensive upgrades, new additions, or a lack of knowledge, dissuade users from shifting to low-carbon alternatives. However, utilizing carbon-intensive technologies is unsustainable highly and emerging companies look to alter the paradigm. For example, utilizing EaaS solutions allow users to access clean energy without undertaking the high costs associated with the technologies. To this end, startups offer service-based solutions to accelerate clean energy adoption.

Zimbabwe-based startup NeedEnergy provides energy-as-a-service solutions. Its energy management platform allows consumers to monitor their energy usage in real-time. Using machine learning algorithms, the startup also offers tailor-made renewable energy solutions. For example, NeedEnergy’s EaaS combines renewable power generation with distributed energy resources (DERs).

Birds Eye Energy designs Dual Purpose Solar Panels

Utilizing solar panels solely for power generation is not a cost-effective strategy since it requires extensive usage before users break even. And so, even though solar panels promote sustainability, they often don’t lead to significant savings in energy bills. As a result, startups develop multi-purpose solar panels that contribute to energy savings. For example, using the radiation falling on the solar panels to heat water generates additional power.

Indian startup Birds Eye Energy offers cost-effective rooftop solar panels. The startup’s dual-purpose panels provide hot water and electricity, enabling early breakeven and recovery of investments. The heat exchanger design further promotes the longevity of the panel. The startup’s panels are suitable for industrial, residential, and commercial purposes.

Oxygen8 provides All-Electric Energy Recovery Ventilator

Installing energy recovery ventilators (ERV) increases energy savings for consumers. However, they typically depend upon fossil fuels to treat the incoming air. This results in GHG emissions and sub-optimal energy savings. Thus, to tackle this problem, startups develop electric ERV solutions. These utilize electricity to heat or cool incoming air and dehumidifies it for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.

Canadian startup Oxygen8 develops NOVA, an all-electric ERV that lowers the carbon footprint of buildings. The unit is Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI)-1060-certified and utilizes a cross-flow enthalpy heat exchanger to transfer heat and humidity. The core of the system provides resistance to bacteria and mold and also ensures zero virus cross-over. In addition, it features variable-speed plenum energy control module (ECM) direct-driven fans. Low sound levels and insulated panels further improve the efficiency of the Oxygen8 solution.
